These days have been published in the prestigious European Respiratory Journal results of longtime research in patients with sleep apnea. The research was realized by team of doctors from 16 European university clinical departments aimed at diagnosing and treating apnea. In the research also took a part employees from the Department of Pneumology and Phtiseology of the Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice and University Hospital of L. Pasteur in Košice, led by the Head of the Department Prof. MUDr. Ružena Tkáčová, DrSc.
'Since 2005, we monitor the occurrence of apnea in 16 European countries. At present we have data on more than 12 thousand patients. At the beginning of monitoring, we saw that a large proportion of our patients - almost every second - has arterial hypertension. Therefore, we asked, how are pauses in breathing during sleep related to high blood pressure. It turned out that it is a lack of oxygen during sleep, which leads to hypertension,' says the Head of the Department of Pneumology and Phtiseology of the Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ in Košice and University Hospital of L. Pasteur in Košice Prof. MUDr. Ružena Tkáčová, DrSc.
