History of Department

Department of Dermatovenerology in Košice was established in 1925. MUDr. A. Měska became a head. He was extraordinary active in various associations, often publishing, he was a member of international organizations. After establishment of Faculty of Medicine in Košice as a branch of Faculty of Medicine Comenius University in Bratislava, clinic of dermatovenerology acquired a status of Department of Dermatovenerology in 1948. Professor MUDr. Eugen Malý, DrSc became a head of department.

During his functionig department had laboratories: histological, alergological, mycological, X-ray and anti-venerological, and laboratory of occupational medicine. Mycological laboratory was established in 1956, doc. MUDr. Milan Kachnič, CSc. became its supervisor. The main workload was therapy of venerological diseases, antrax eradication, epidemiology and therapy of dermatomycoses, diagnosis and therapy of food, drug and contact allergy.

In 1959 University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik was established in Košice and also selfcontained Department of Dermatovenerology within the Faculty of Medicine. The first head of department became professor MUDr. Eugen Malý, DrSc. Assistant of professor MUDr. Tréger, CSc. and professor MUDr. Ladislav Chmel, DrSc. from Bratislava.

Professor MUDr. E. Malý, DrSc. and MUDr. E. Štammová, CSc. significantly participated in creating a modern serological diagnostic methods of syphilis and in establishing a Laboratory for diagnosis of syphilis – TPI laboratory. Professor MUDr. E. Malý, DrSc was concerned in oncodermatology development and its histopathology.

Doc. MUDr. M. Kachnič, CSc. developed human mycology from 1956, doc. MUDr. M. Šak, CSc. occupational diseases, professor MUDr. J. Uhrík, CSc. diagnostic algorithms and treatment of leg ulcers. Establishment of Faculty of Medicine and Department of Dermatovenerology contributed toward development of dermatovenerology in the eastern territory of Slovakia.

In 1975 professor MUDr. Július Uhrík, CSc became a head of department. Workload was mainly specialized on development of diagnosis and therapy of leg ulcers and oncodermatology. In 1981 construction of a new building of Faculty Hospital was finished and professor MUDr. Július Uhrík, CSc was forcefully active in achieving new compartments. This allowed to expand a laboratory section to enable development of immunoalergological a immunohistological diagnostic methods of autoimmune skin diseases.

After his retirement the head of department was doc. MUDr. František Héjj, CSc. During years 1989-1991 and from 1991 doc. MUDr. Darina Jarčušková, CSc. after competitive examination. During her activity the range of diagnostic and therapeutic methods in angiology was enhanced.

Devices accommodation of physical therapy was improved and new specialized ambulances were established.

In 2000 a head of department became professor MUDr. Jagienka Jautová, PhD.,MBA after competitive examination. During her functioning immunohistological diagnosis of autoimmune bullous diseases and connective tissue diseases is developing together with diagnosis and therapy of drug and insect poison allergy. Department is a Centre of biological therapy of psoriasis, Centre of immunomodulation and photodynamic therapy of basal cell carcinomas and actinic keratoses. The range of specialized ambulances was enhanced:

– Admitting and interdisciplinary ambulance
– Occupational medicine ambulance
– Ambulance for patients with psoriasis
– Ambulance of pediatric dermatology
– Ambulance for patients with atopic dermatitis
– Ambulance of allergology
– Angiology ambulance
– Mycological ambulance
– Ambulance for patients with STD
– Consultation of serious dermatoses
– Ambulance of immunology
– Digital dermatoscopy examination, excision of pigmented moles
– Fotodynamic therapy of Non-melanoma skin cancer
– Ambulance of physical therapy
– Biological therapy of psoriasis
– Ambulance od cosmetic dermatology
