This year’s international competition Náboj, of five-person teams of high school students from the Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and Great Britain, took place on the 7th of April 2017 in select cities. Every year, Náboj is held in Bratislava and Košice. For this year’s venue, the Alejová high school lent its gym to the Faculty of Science of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, who is one of the organisers of the competition. In all 96 senior and 111 junior teams took part in the competition in the Slovak Republic. Two junior teams reached significant gains. They were able to gain 4th place – Gymnázium Poštová, Košice and 7th place – Gymnázium Alejová, Košice, in the overall international competition. The prizes awarded by the Faculty of Science were handed out by the Vice-dean for External relations, Assoc. prof. RNDr. Marián Kireš, PhD., who praised all the competitors and wished them good luck in choosing their future university education.
The tasks are made in a way, which allows for people, who have little experience with solving mathematical Mathematical Olympiad, to take part as well. Victory is not only determined by the individual knowledge of a team member, but by the ability of members to work as a team.
According to RNDr. Róberta Hajduk, PhD., who coordinates the Náboj competition for the Faculty of Science, the competition utilises not just methods of solving problems learnt in school, but requires a certain degree of inventiveness and cleverness. The tasks are untraditional and are made to help promote imagination, logical thinking and most of all an interest in mathematics.

We thank all, who took part and are looking forward to next year’s competition!
