On the 23rd January 2012 the meeting of the current Rector, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. with former UPJŠ Rectors took place in the premises of Rector’s Apartment on Medická Street in Košice.

Prof. MUDr. Emil Matejíček, DrSc. (UPJŠ Rector in 1964-1969), prof. Ing. Slavko Chalupka, CSc. (UPJŠ Rector in 1984-1990), prof. RNDr. Lev Bukovský, DrSc. (UPJŠ Rector in 1991-1996) a prof. h. c. prof. JUDr. Vladimír Babčák, CSc. (UPJŠ Rector in 2003-2007) accepted the invitation and Prof. Ing. Dušan Podhradský, DrSc. (UPJŠ Rector in 1997-2003) apologized for his absence in the meeting.

Friendly atmosphere of the meeting made room for discussion about the achievements of the university in the last year and also for comparison of the outcomes of university activities in the past period. The meeting was fruitful especially in terms of exchange of opinions about the future of the university in various areas of its activities.

When applying electronically the fee for admission procedure is 30€ (procedure without the admission exam), 40€ (procedure with the admission exam).

Memorandum of Academic Cooperation with California Institute of Technology

On the 12 January 2012 the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Eugen Jurzyca (SDKÚ-DS), signed the memorandum of academic cooperation with California Institute of Technology during the video conference session. On behalf of the California Institute of technology, one of the most world-renowned universities, the memorandum was signed by professor Harvey B. Newman.

“Slovak universities have been co-operating with the California Institute of Technology for eight years. Both parties were interested in creating and signing the cooperation memorandum,“ the spokeswoman of the Ministry, Miriam Žiaková, stated for TASR. According to her the mutual collaboration will reach even higher level since the document was signed by the Minister himself.

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, as well as Technical Universities in Košice and Žilina have had co-operation with the California Institute of Technology. The UPJŠ EVO Developmental Team has been collaborating with the California Institute of Technology on the development of EVO.

Corporation Agreement Signed by UPJŠ and Institutes of SAV

On the 22nd of December 2011 the corporation agreement was signed by Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the Institute of Materials Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice, the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice and the Institute of Geotechnics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice. The contracting parties agreed on developing mutually beneficial cooperation, as well as on participating in solving innovative projects in cooperation with other partners and thus contributing to scientific research, technical and economic development in Slovakia, with the objective of creating excellent laboratories, rationalization of investment costs and their use.

Based on the agreement the contracting parties set up the Joint Laboratory of Transmission Electron Microscopy “SLTEM”, which will be able to solve significant tasks in advancement of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies using the methods of transmission electron microscopy, particularly in accordance with the activities of the project “Creating Infrastructure of Centre of Excellence of Progressive Materials with Nano and Submicron Structure” (ITMS code: 26220120035). The seat of the corporation is Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Faculty of Science, Park Angelinum 9, Košice.

The signature of the corporation agreement and the SLTEM statute was followed by the ceremonial opening of the new laboratory equipped with cutting-edge transmission electron microscope with an acceleration tension of 200kV. The microscope enables to observe living and non-living matters‘ details using the magnification up to 1.5 million times and the definition of 0,2nm. It is also fitted with the STEM detector and the EDX detector for specimen chemical structure analysis.

The agreement was signed on the premises of UPJŠ Faculty of Science, Park Angelinum 9, and the parties were represented by :

FREE MOVERS - WELCOME TO UPJŠ

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) offers international students who want to add an international dimension to their degrees the possibility to study and/or to do research at our university.

FREE MOVERS at UPJŠ are administered by the International Relations Office.

As a Free Mover you will have to arrange much of your stay at UPJŠ by yourself. The International Relations Office and the contact person at the faculty, institute or department, however, will assist you throughout the process.

Admission requirements for individual programmes and research stays are set independently by each faculty, institute or department. Admittance to study programmes and research stays is limited. Please note that the Faculty of Medicine does not accept any Free Movers.

Visit of Chernivtsi National University Delegates at P. J. Šafárik University in Košice

On the 29th of November 2011 the Rector of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc., had an opportunity to welcome to the premises of Rectorate the delegates of Chernivtsi National University, namely prof. Dr. Yuriy Lopatynskyy (the Vice-Rector for International Relations of Chernivtsi National University), doc. Dr. Sergiy Nezhurbida (the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law), Mr. Sergiy Lukanyuk, MA (Head of the International Office) and dr. Valentyna Vasylova (Head of the Centre for European Studies). At the meeting the UPJŠ was represented by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, doc. Mgr. Slávka Tomaščíková, PhD., the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Public Administration, doc. Ing. Silvia Ručinská, PhD., the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, JUDr. Regina Hučková, PhD. and the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, doc. RNDr. Michal Jaščur, CSc. Various topics of public and cultural life were discussed in a friendly atmosphere, together with issue related to the priorities of present higher education in the Slovak Republic and abroad. The Universities’ educational and research achievement were compared. The guests were strongly interested in UPJŠ development and investment plans, and they also expressed interest in bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the area of law, public administration, geography and physics that could be carried out under the framework of cross-border cooperation.

Unveiling of the Memorial Plaque in Honour of Věra Medveďová

On the 16th of November 2011 Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice memorialised Mgr. Věra Medveďová by the ceremonial unveiling of the memorial plaque in her honour that took place in the presence of university management and other numerous guests. Mgr. Věra Medveďová was the pioneer of jazz gymnastics, aerobic and medical exercise for seniors in the region of the eastern Slovakia. Opening words at the ceremony delivered by the UPJŠ Rector, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. were followed by the address of doc. PhDr. Ivan Šulc, CSc. and touching memories of Tomáš, son of Mgr. Věra Medveďová.

Two UPJŠ Faculties with Top Ranking in Slovakia by ARRA

The Academic Ranking Agency (ARRA) presented its seventh rating of Slovak university faculties based on publicly available and verifiable data about the quality of education and research at the individual faculties in 2010. 104 faculties of public universities and 5 faculties of private universities were included into the rating divided into 11 areas.

The “rocket” start of the UPJŠ Faculty of Arts and its acquired first place is the only considerable change in the philosophical group. Thanks to the highest number of publications registered in international databases in 2010 and its success in acquiring grants, the Faculty of Arts gained a significant lead amongst all the faculties in the group.

For the first time, the UPJŠ Faculty of Science took the first place in the natural sciences group, where it got ahead of the last year’s winner thanks to the increase in grants (especially foreign ones) as well as the lowest number of students per professor and associate professor, whereas those had the high share in the total number of lecturers.

The UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine was ranked the second in the ”MED“ group, advancing in the indicators of grant acquisition. The Faculty has also increased the number of quotations in international databases, as well as the number of registered applicants compared to the plan.

There were no significant change in the ranking of law faculties, where the UPJŠ Faculty of Law was placed third and achieved the best results regarding the number of students per lecturer as well as was the most successful one in grants.

The UPJŠ Faculty of Public Administration was ranked the ninth in the other social sciences group.

On the 21st of November 2011 professor MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc., alongside with the Vice-Rector for University Education and Information Technologies, professor RNDr. Pavol Sovák, CSc. invited the excellent students of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice who were presented the annual Rector‘s Award. The meeting took place on the occasion of the Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy in KAM Club of the UPJŠ.

On November 22-24, 2011 the fifth fair that focused on education, career and innovation - PRO EDUCO 2011, was held in the “House of Arts“ in Košice. Numerous exhibitors met on the area of 1,500 m2 with the ambition to cover the whole spectrum of interesting topics in the area of education and career, and to provide inspiring information to the visitors.

The exhibition stall of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice belonged undoubtedly amongst the most attractive ones, not only by its format but also by the style of the presentation of the study programmes. University staff and students of all the faculties actively participated in the fair and they were helping the visitors to decide about how to choose their future university with their expert advice and experience. The great advantage for the prospective students was the opportunity of direct communication as well as the chance to obtain promotional and information materials about UPJŠ.

BIG FUT at UPJŠ

On the 22nd of November 2011 the live discussion about the topic “When will we live to 100?” took place in the main auditorium at the Faculty of Medicine. The presenters - Štefan Hríb and Martin Mojžiš, together with invited professionals, were trying to answer the questions about how the healthcare will change in the future to help us all to vital longevity. Online transmission of the discussion was available at www.bigfut.sk .

Acknowledgements go to the organisers of the event for their excellent collaboration and coordination of the event and to all the students and university staff who were present at the discussion and thus gave support to the great idea. Special thanks goes to prof. MUDr. Daniel Pella, PhD., the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, P. J. Šafárik University in Košice, who represented UPJŠ and contributed to the discussion as an excellent expert and an interesting speaker.

Student Blood Drop Campaign - Results

The Red Cross Slovakia in cooperation with the National Blood Transfusion Service in Slovakia and haematology and blood transfusion departments of Slovak hospitals organised the "Student Blood Drop" campaign from the 17 October to the 19 November 2011. This year the campaign focused on attracting blood donors from among students and young people and it was carried out under the motto “Time for Life!“ Its aim was to promote the idea of blood donation among young people and to raise their interest in such a highly humane deed as the blood donation undoubtedly is. Since the campaign was particularly aimed at new donors, the local Red Cross units organized more than 100 blood drives into secondary schools and universities. Out of 25,861 potential blood donors who took part in the campaign, 22,001 managed to donate, including 6,178 first-time donors, mostly in Bratislava and Košice.

During the campaign, the Bronze Plaque of Dr. Jánsky (for 10 volunteer blood donations) was awarded to two students of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice:

2,783 donors, including 642 first-time donors, visited donation centres or blood drives during the 5 weeks of the campaign. 1,553 students took part in the Student Blood Drop, 614 were the first-time donors:

Ivan Gašparovič, the President of the Slovak Republic, gave nomination decrees to 46 new professors of Slovak universities on the 28 November 2011.

The Rector of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice paid tribute to famous personalities in the history of Košice and Slovakia

There are many personalities in the pantheon of Košice whose work has become an important part of the Slovak history. Among those who undoubtedly belong there one finds the polyglot, notary, rector and mayor Ján Bocatius, as well as the philosopher, theologist and historian Samuel Timon. On the 11 November 2011, the ceremonial unveiling of memorial plaques in their honour took place on the Main Street in the presence of the Mayor of Košice, the Chairman of Matica Slovenská, the Chairman of the Ecumenic Fellowship of Denominations and Religious Communities and numerous other guests.

In 2011, 390 years have passed since Ján Bocatius deceased and 290 years have passed since Samuel Timon started his career at the University of Košice. The memorial plaques to both of them were unveiled on the building of the Ancient University and the Old Town Hall in Košice, the ceremonial being accompanied by the performance of the Košice choirs and medieval buglers.

”We live in the present, we think about the future, but sometimes we forget about our rich past. Thanks to such ancestors as the mayor Ján Bocatius and the historian Samuel Timon, Košice has become an important town. They prove that the biggest steps forward are not made by talking, but by deeds. All of us whom you trust will do everything we can do to make Košice improve constantly" - the Mayor of Košice, Richard Raši, declared in his address.
