Do not hesitate and let your children, grandchildren or friends who are the pupils of the fifth or sixth grade of elementary school become, for a while, a student of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice! We are looking forward to having all curious children and their numerous questions from 8 to 12 July 2013.

You can register your child for the project only by an electronic form, i.e. by filling out the form in section Application after 1 May 2013. The number of children involved in the project is limited and this year we are planning to include about 50 children to the project. The registration fee for 2013 is EUR 40.00 including VAT per one child.

Meeting of the Club of Professors

On 19 February 2013 a meeting of the Club of Professors of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice took place. An interesting lecture on "Intellectual Property Protection at UPJŠ" by prof. JUDr. Peter Vojčík, CSc. was attended in the Historical Auditorium at UPJŠ Rectorate. Topics such as protection of the personality rights, protection of a name and individual reputation of a physical and legal person, intellectual property law, copyright law, industrial law, creation of copyright works in employment, or the area of improvement proposals captured attention of the audience and encouraged a broad discussion.

Memorandum of Understanding with Kharkiv State University of Food Technology and Trade

On the 25 April 2013 Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, represented by the Rector, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. and Kharkiv State University of Food Technology and Trade, represented by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, professor Andrey Foshchan signed the Memorandum of Understanding and thus opened the possibility of exchanging academic, teaching and scientific staff and students. Summer schools, workshops and conferences can also be organized in scope of this cooperation.

PaedDr. Klaudia Zusková, PhD. from UPJŠ Institute of Physical Education and Sport, Mr. Leonid Yatsun, Head of the Department of International Relations and Tourism Management of Kharkiv State University of Food Technology and Trade and Dr. Dmitrij Lanský from Kharkiv State University of Food Technology and Trade were also present at the meeting, held in the UPJŠ Rectorate premises.

The Annual Rector's Awards

Conferment of the Annual Rector's Awards traditionally takes place on the occasion of the Day of Fight for Freedom and Democracy. The Rector of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. welcomed students of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration, Faculty of Arts and the Institute of Physical Education and Sport on 20th November 2012 in the premises of KAM Club on Medická Street in Košice, to award them the prizes for their excellent study results throughout the whole period of their studies at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. The Rector together with the Vice-Rector for the University Education and Information Technologies, prof. RNDr. Pavol Slovák, CSc., awarded students in accordance with the provision of article, 36, paragraph 1, point (a) of the Statute of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, with decrees about conferment of Annual Award of the Rector.

Award of "doctor honoris causa" at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

The highest degree of our academic milieu was awarded to His Excellency Mr Gianni Buquicchio, the President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) in Strasbourg, France, on the basis of the provision 5 of the University Statute and following the proposal of the Academic Board of the Faculty of Law.
The list of precious guests included the President of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic, Ms. Ivetta Macejková, His Excellency, Rudolf Schuster, President of the Slovak Republic, Deputy Chair of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Ms Jana Laššáková, the first deputy of the General Prosecutor of the Slovak Republic, Mr. Ladislav Tichý, judges of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic, presidents of foreign constitutional courts and their excellencies, members of the diplomatic corps, former rectors of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, rectors, vice-rectors, and deans of foreign and Slovak public universities, and members of Academic Senate of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

Mr Gianni Buquicchio was born in 1944 in Bari, Italy. Between the years 1963 and 1967 he studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bari and graduated there in 1968, being awarded a doctorate of law for his thesis in Public International Law. The first three years of his career (1968 – 1971) were those of a lecturer at the Institute of International Law and Political Science of the University of Bari, and in 1970 he was also a visiting professor at the Directorate of Legal Affairs of the Council of Europe. Since 1971 he has worked at the Council of Europe at various posts related to Public Law and he was responsible for the Conference of European Ministers of Justice, for the opinions requested by the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly and the Secretary General.
Since 1990, Mr Gianni Buquicchio’s professional life has been linked with the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission). As Secretary of the Commission (1996 – 2009), he contributed to its successful establishment and development by ensuring the conception, preparation and ollow-up of projects concerning constitutional reforms and the setting up of democratic institutions within Europe and beyond. In 2009 he was elected President of the Venice Commission and after a successful re-election in 2011 he has held the post. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the “Venice for Research on Peace” Foundation and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL).
Since 1968, Mr Gianni Buquicchio has conducted lectures and seminars and has taken an active part in conferences dedicated to the activities of the Venice Commission, an independent advisory body of the Council of Europe. The Venice Commission, while working with member states as well as non-member states and international organisations and bodies, has focused on the establishment of legal guarantees for the development of democracy, for supporting the rule of law and for strengthening the acquaintanceship of the member states with each other’s legal systems. The Venice Commission was created by 18 member states of the Council of Europe and today this body consists of 56 European and non-European member States. An important part of the Venice Commission’s activity is also independent research, resulting in studies, opinions and drafts of the standards for the creation of new legal enactments. At the same time the Venice Commission is supposed to provide opinions requested by the bodies of the Council of Europe, its Secretary General or a member state.
Mr Gianni Buquicchio has devoted his life to developing the principles of the rule of law, democracy, humanity and protection of human rights and freedoms. He deserves to be recognized as a valuable and well-known European personality in these fields. The protection and guarantee of human rights and freedoms is one of the elementary attributes of the legal state and it touches the existence of every single individual.

UPJŠ at the 15th International Educational Fair in Krakow

International Educational Fair in Krakow belongs to the biggest events of its kind in Poland. This year the organizers welcomed exhibitors from Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Ukraine. The UPJŠ was the only representative of Slovakia there. The Fair was attended by more than 15,000 visitors during its three-day run from 21-23 March 2013. The UPJŠ stand was also visited by a precious guest, Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Krakow, JUDr. Marek Lisánsky.

Tomaščíková, PhD., the Vice-Rector for International Relations, for the supervision of the preparation of materials for the Fair and the active presenters of UPJŠ in Krakow, Ing. Z. Consulate General of the Slovak Republic in Krakow

On 22 March 2013 UPJŠ had the opportunity to welcome 30 students and two professors of the Univerzity Cergy Pontoise in Paris. Students and professors of European Studies and International Relations were welcomed by the UPJŠ Rector, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. and the University was presented by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, doc. Mgr. Slávka Tomaščíková PhD. The presentation of activities of SAIA by Ing. Zuzana Kalináčová was followed by a lively discussion with the Vice-Rector for Research and Science, prof. RNDr. Juraj Černák, CSc. The students and professors were interested not only in the complexity of the international cooperation in research but also in its impact on educational activities of UPJŠ.

On the 26 March 2013 Ms Cynthia Carr, an expert of the Fullbright Commission from the University of California, Riverside, visited UPJŠ. The visit was organized by Mgr. Mária Čekešová and co-financed by the Slovak Rector's Conference. She was met by the UPJŠ Rector, prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. and the Vice-Rector for International Relations, doc. Mgr. Slávka Tomaščíková, PhD. at the Rectorate. In very friendly atmosphere they discussed the possibilities of cooperation with American universities within Fullbright Expert Programme and the importance of contacts with university graduates via Alumni Clubs.
Ms Carr visited the laboratories of the Faculty of Arts in the "Aristotle" building and the University Library building "Gutenberg". She met prof. Ing. Július Zimmermann, CSc. and the director of University Library, PhDr. Daniela Džuganová.

UPJŠ among the Top Four Slovak Universities according to the Cybermetrics Lab Ranking

In the ranking of world universities and scientific institutions "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities", Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice finds itself in the top four among Slovak universities. The ranking of the Spanish company Cybermetrics Lab rates scientific institutions from around the world on the basis of various, even indirect, indicators taking into account not only their scientific activities but also economic, social and cultural activities. The basic unit for rating is the domain of the institution, therefore only institutions with an independent web domain are included in the ranking.
The primary objective is to support publishing on the Internet, Open Access iniciatives, electronic access to publications and other academic sources.

"Professor Emeritus" for the Significant Contribution to the Field of Science and Education.

In accordance with § 78 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on universities and on the changes of and/or amendments to some of the law acts as amended, based on the proposal of the Dean of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine and the approval by UPJŠ Scientific Board, the UPJŠ Rector prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. awarded the honorary title of "Professor Emeritus" to prof. MUDr. Július Vajó, DrSc., for his significant contribution to the field of science and education. The UPJŠ Rector and UPJŠ Vice-Rector for Science and Research hosted the awarded professor in the premises of the Rector's Office on the 13th December 2012 and they personally presented the decree to prof. MUDr. Július Vajó, DrSc.

New Year's Meeting of Former UPJŠ Rectors

Prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc., the Rector of UPJŠ in Košice presented an optimistic evaluation of the year 2012 at the meeting with former Rectors of our university. He emphasized a relative stability in educational, scientific and research fields as well as the progress in foreign and development activities. New Year's meeting took place on Thursday, 24 January 2013 in the premises of the Rector's suite on Medická Street in Košice.

Rector UPJŠ Welcomed the General Consul of Ukraine

On 14 November 2012 prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc., the Rector of UPJŠ in Košice and doc. Mgr. Slávka Tomaščíková, PhD., the Vice-Rector for International Relations of UPJŠ, welcomed the General Consul of Ukraine, prof. Oľga Benč, PhD. During the meeting they discussed various issue of public and cultural life, focusing on the priorities of the higher education. They expressed the belief that the mutual cooperation shall focus on the areas of science and education.

UPJŠ Supported the Nationwide Campaign 'Student Blood Drop'

'Student Blood Drop' is the second largest campaign at the national level that has an influence primarily on schools, but also on companies and organizations. Its purpose is to persuade mainly young people to donate blood regularly, which would ensure sufficient amounts of blood in healthcare system. 'Student Blood Drop' in our city is supported by Košice Regional Council, Archdiocese of Košice, the Technical University in Košice, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, General Health Insurance, Inc., Hospital Košice-Šaca, Inc. First Private Hospital, Eurotrade Plus, Ltd., Soroptimist Club, ČSOB Financial Group, Airport Košice, Inc.
Between 15 October and 16 November 2012 more than 2730 donors including 1528 students, visited the mobile and regular medical stations. More than 500 people donated for the first time, out of which 418 were students. The most successful
universities were the Technical University in Košice (319/47), Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (128/12), University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice (94/22), Faculty of Business Economics of the University of Economy in Košice (30/3).
