Basic information about department

The current 1st department of Internal Medicine  has been created from  the previous 1st and the 3rd Internal clinics providing  the widespread profilization in internal medicine.   The most important internal subspecialities in  the clinic are as follows: cardiology, gastroenterology and hepatology, endocrinology and diabetes, as well as rheumatology.  Important specialities that are also necessary for complex activities  of the clinic are nephrology and angiology.

Cardiology is one of dominant fields of interest, with the focus on congestive heart failure, arterial hypertension, treatment of various types of coronary heart disease. In addition the clinic is focused on the prevention of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.  The coronary and arrythmologic intensive care unit is a part of  the clinic providng  a very good condition for acute arrythmologic care.

In the field of gastroenterology, the 1st internal clinic provides a complex diagnostic and treatment possibilities in gastroenterology and hepatology including endoscopic approaches and ERCP.   Research in gastroenterology is focused predominantly on oesophageal disorders (oesophageal motility), celiac disease and idiopathic bowel diseases.  Research in hepatology is focused on liver cirrhosis and its complications, chronic hepatitis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.  There is a centre for idiopathic bowel diseases and also centre for virus hepatitides.

Endocrinology  and diabetology are also very important topics of interest of the clinic. The clinic covers complex management for patients with endocrinopathies and i tis a centre for the treatment of patients with growth hormone deficiency. Research is focused predominantly on adrenal diseases and polycystic ovary syndrome in relation to insulin resistance.  The 1st Department of Internal medicine represents a centre for the treatment of diabetics with insulin pumps. It also provides complex management of acute states in diabetology, management of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy a diagnosis of hypoglycemic states.  The clinic has is accredited for specialization training  in endocrinology.

An intensive metabolic care unit as a part of clinic  serves for management of patients with acute states in hepatology, endocrinology and diabetology.

In the field of rheumatology the clinic provides complex management of rheumatic diseases, particularly systemic connective tissue disorders and it is a centre for biological treatment of resistant rheumatic diseases.  Research is focused on rheumatoid arthritis and quality of life and also hormonal aspects of rheumatologic disorders.

The clinic is a part of the Centre of Excellence with an outstanding infrastructure, that can be helpful for patients and also for research in all topics of internal medicine.
