First Department of Surgery at Medical Faculty of Safarik University and University Hospital of L. Pasteur in Košice is a direct successor of the Department of Surgery established on September 1, 1948. In its history, has overcome double movement. In 1974 Department of Surgery worked in the surgical building and in 1982 the Department of Surgery start work in the new hospital in the street Tr. SNP 1, Košice. In September 1991, the Department of Surgery was renamed at the First Department of Surgery. The new Department of Transplantation and Department of Minimally Invasive Surgery became parts of First Department of Surgery in 2009.

First Department of Surgery in its history has seen many achievements in the field of medical practice and teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate education and research activities. The medical practice provides extensive activities, emergency, urgent and planned care in surgery. The First Department of Surgery focus on comprehensive diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of GIT with emphasis on the issues of colorectal surgery, surgery of the esophagus and stomach. In hepato-biliary surgery, spleen surgery, but especially of the pancreas the First Department of Surgery has an important position not only within the region of Eastern Slovakia but whole Slovakia.

As the only surgical department in the eastern region of Slovakia carried out the transplant program for cadaveric kidney transplantation and kidney from a living donor. First Department of Surgery provides a program of laparoscopic surgery of the gallbladder, hernia surgery spleen, adrenal, fundoplication, liver, CAPD catheters. Recently, the program extended to the toughest field of laparoscopic surgery and laparoscopic resection of the colon and rectum in benign as well as malignant diseases. In the First Department of Surgery focusses on endocrine surgery and breast surgery, undertaking a comprehensive consultancy in colorectal, mammary and liver and pancreatic surgery. Patients have the possibility to stay in a luxury rooms (total 15 beds).

Part of the First Department of Surgery is: Intensive Care Unit, Endoscopic Workplace and Center of Minimally Invasive Surgery. It has a total of 80 beds (ICU 12), which are situated on the 14th and 15th floor.
