The Department of Pathology provides comprehensive pedagogical activities for students of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, Faculty of Medicine. They include undergraduate teaching of the subject Pathological Anatomy for the medical study programmes of General Medicine and Dentistry in Slovak and English languages, as well as for pre-medical study programmes Nursing, Physiotherapy, Public Health and Laboratory diagnostic methods in health care in Slovak language.
Pathological anatomy is one of the basic medical disciplines, the science which uses morphological methods for determination and monitoring of functional and structural relationships of disease patterns during human life and after death. The basic aspects of the science are etiology and pathogenesis, structural (macroscopic and microscopic) changes and clinical manifestations of diseases.
The Department has a young perspective staff, full of enthusiasm, with a high level of pedagogical work, with several years of professional experience in the field of pathology and with a constant tendency to increase the quality of teaching and to continue their permanent personal professional growth. The staff prepared textual and graphic material for students using their own systematized and partially digitalized archive of more than 25000 micro- and macrophotographs, which is available for the students according to current needs.
The workplace of the Department of Pathology UPJŠ FM and UNLP is located on Rastislavova No. 43 in Košice, on the 2nd floor of the Pavilion VII in its central part (the secretary office, offices of doctors – assistant professors and laboratory technicians, histopathological laboratory, photolaboratory), next on the 1st floor of Pavilion VII in its side wing (teaching room No. 2 and No. 3) and part is situated in the building of Pavilion X in its side part (teaching room No. 1).
The doctors of the Department of Pathology, in cooperation with the medical healthcare staff of the Department, participate in biopsy excision activities, in evaluation of bioptic and cytological samples, thus contributing to the process of diagnostics, medical care and prevention. Students have an opportunity to make excursion around the workplace and to look at the activities of the biopsy workplace, as well as they can get acquainted with diagnostic methods in pathology.
In cooperation with the Medico-Legal and Pathological-Anatomical Department of Health Care Surveillance Authority in Košice the doctors – assistant professors participate in autopsy performance with the presence of students. So the students can see and evaluate autopsy procedures and autopsy findings, with the determination of the cause of death. Students can combine the acquired theoretical knowledge about morphological changes in disease patterns with practice, too.
