2008 Department of Epidemiology, Department of Hygiene, and Department of Social Medicine were merged together to create the Department of Public Health. The original departments operated as separate units within the new umbrella department. At the end of year 2009 the Health Psychology Unit joined the department.

2015 After five year of existence the Department of Public Health was split into four separate departments, and one of them became the current Department of Social and Behavioural Medicine. This organizational change resulted mainly from a different orientation of teaching and research activities of individual units as well as the need for  further development and strengthening of separate scientific branches.
