The clinical Department has made very good progress in the field of curative and preventive care in Gynecology and Obstetrics in particular for the past 10 years and has become a major provider of care not only in the respective catchment area, but also in a wide region. In the year 2006, the original Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics transformed into the 3rd Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Slovak Medical University and acquired the status of postgraduate education institution specializing in Gynecology and Obstetrics. In the year 2012, the Department has been incorporated within the clinical teaching units of the Faculty of Medicine and became the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine, where in addition to postgraduate education it mainstreamed with undergraduate teaching in the doctoral programme of study of General Medicine.
In addition to the standard gynaecological curative and preventive care, the Department is gradually becoming a leading endoscopic unit in the region providing a wide range of mininvasive gynaecological surgical procedures. A range of laparoscopic interventions is becoming wider not only in benign conditions, but also in some oncogynaecological surgical indications. The number of hysteroscopic interventions is growing, not only diagnostic, but also hysteroresectoscopic ones.
The Obstetrics Section of the Department is engaged in physiological and pathological conditions in pregnancy, during the delivery, and in the puerperium. Significant progress occurs in feto-maternal medicine. Establishment of the certified Centre of the Fetal Medicine Foundation London has enabled the introduction of advanced ultrasound prenatal diagnostics and fetal medicine. In partnership with the UPJŠ FM theoretical institutes, it gradually develops scientific research dealing with pregnancy pathologies represented mainly by hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension).
