The regional round of the Festival of Science and Technology AMAVET – exhibit competition of the scientific and technological projects made by primary and secondary school students was held on the 18th of October 2018 at the Faculty of Science, P.J. Šafárik University in Košice.
The organizers of the event were AMAVET – The Association for youth, science and technology in Slovakia, The private eight-year secondary grammar school Dneperská 1, Košice and the Faculty of Science, P.J. Šafárik University in Košice.
The Festival of Science and Technology AMAVET is an exhibit competition of the scientific and technological projects made by primary and secondary school students, where the contestants present their projects via panel/poster presentations. The students compete in the following categories: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electricity and mechanics, Energy and transport, Environmental sciences, Physics and astronomy, Geosciences, Informatics and computer engineering, Medicine and health, Social sciences.
The projects are evaluated by a panel of experts from the ranks of scientists and academics. This year for the Chairman of the 20-member committee was again nominated prof. Mgr. Jaroslav Hofierka, PhD., Director of the Institute of Geography at the Faculty of Science, P.J. Šafárik University in Košice.

87 contestants with 58 projects participated in the regional round of the Festival of Science and Technology AMAVET for the Košice and Prešov Region. The contestants had the opportunity to show the results of their work to the festival visitors, other secondary school students, university students and the staff of the Faculty of Science, P.J. Šafárik University in Košice. Part of the event were interesting lectures and the students also got to see the research laboratories of the faculty.
The best projects were awarded with several prizes:
Interesting about this year’s regional round was, that as well as being judged by an expert committee, the projects could also be evaluated by the students and the faculty staff, scientists, and also other visitors in the form of electronic voting. The visitors were most interested in the Radio-controlled car project, which received the highest number of votes and was awarded the Natural Scientists Prize by the dean of the faculty.
The most prestigious was the AMAVET Award, which allowed 34 projects to take part in the national final of the Festival of Science and Technology AMAVET, as part of the Science and Technology Week being held from the 8th until the 10th of November 2018 at INCHEBA in Bratislava.
Present at the event and presenting the awards at the closing ceremony were JUDr. Marián Giba, the Vice-Chairman of the Association for youth, science and technology, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, P.J. Šafárik University in Košice doc. RNDr. Gabriel Semanišin, PhD., the Dean of the Faculty of Materials, Metallurgy and Recycling, Technical University of Košice doc. Ing. Iveta Vasková, PhD., the Chairman of the Committee prof. Mgr. Jaroslav Hofierka, PhD. a RNDr. Miriam Melišová-Čugová, Headmistress of the Secondary grammar school Dneperská in Košice. The esteemed guest of this year’s regional round of the Festival of Science and Technology AMAVET was the Permanent Secretary for Education, Science and Sport of the Slovak Mgr. Oľga Nachtmannová, who accepted the invitation from the organizers and came to support the young science and technology enthusiasts.
