This five-day event brought together students and lecturers from several European universities, including Cardinal Stefan Wyszy\u0144ski University in Warsaw, Charles University in Prague, the University of South Bohemia in \u010cesk\u00e9 Bud\u011bjovice and the University of West Bohemia in Plze\u0148, to explore the history of tourism, mobility and travel across various historical periods and contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme was opened by <strong>Dr. Maro\u0161 Melich\u00e1rek<\/strong> (Department of History, Faculty of Arts, UPJ\u0160), <strong>Associate Professor Vladim\u00edr Lichner<\/strong> (Vice-Dean for International Relations, Faculty of Arts, UPJ\u0160), <strong>Prof. Martin Pek\u00e1r<\/strong> (Head of the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, UPJ\u0160) and <strong>Associate Professor Mikul\u00e1\u0161 Jan\u010dura<\/strong> (Department of History, Faculty of Arts, UPJ\u0160). They welcomed the participants and outlined the activity&#8217;s aims: to connect historical thinking and the study of tourism and mobility with current sustainability and cultural heritage issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening lecture, Tourism in Antiquity, was presented by <strong>Dr. Kamil \u0160va\u0148a<\/strong> (Department of History, UPJ\u0160), who discussed how travel in the ancient world shaped social relations and perceptions of the world. In the afternoon, the first block of student presentations followed, featuring papers on topics such as the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century Grand Tour phenomenon (<strong>Aleksandra Biega\u0142a<\/strong>, UKSW), the contrast between mass and individualised tourism (<strong>Karol\u00edna Rytychov\u00e1<\/strong>, UWB), and the development of spa towns as centres of European tourism (<strong>Julia Tyzska<\/strong>, UKSW). The day concluded with a guided tour of medieval Ko\u0161ice, led by <strong>Associate Professor Drahoslav Magdo\u0161ko<\/strong> (Department of History, UPJ\u0160). There was also an evening pub quiz organised by students of the <strong><em>Spolku Universitas<\/em><\/strong>, which offered an entertaining yet educational perspective on the history of tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the second day (14 October), Polish students presented papers on various topics, including the history of luxury trains (<strong>Karol Podolski<\/strong>, UKSW), the role of women in travel (<strong>Gabriela Kisielewska<\/strong>, UKSW) and the interconnections between tourism and nationalism (<strong>Franciszek Bogdaniuk<\/strong>, UKSW). In the afternoon, <strong>Associate Professor Mikul\u00e1\u0161 Jan\u010dura <\/strong>(Department of History, UPJ\u0160), delivered a lecture titled <em>The History of Tourism: Background, Specificities, and Challenges for Historians<\/em>, in which he discussed how tourism history can be explored within broader cultural and social contexts. In the evening, there was a screening of the film <em>Green Book<\/em>, followed by an online discussion with <strong>Prof. Jeffrey E. Anderson<\/strong> (University of Louisiana at Monroe, USA) about travel as a space for cultural encounters and prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mid-week programme (15 October) focused on travel and tourism in totalitarian regimes. Student presentations covered topics ranging from the Nazi organisation <em>Kraft durch Freude<\/em> (<strong>Karolina Holl\u00e1<\/strong>, Charles University) to holidays in the Polish People&#8217;s Republic (<strong>Krzysztof Lig\u0119za <\/strong>and<strong> Krystian Gajc<\/strong>, UKSW). Further papers compared past and present models of tourism (<strong>Veronika Feren\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1<\/strong>, Charles University) and examined organised holidays through the lens of leisure and social clich\u00e9s (<strong>Kate\u0159ina Eisenhammerov\u00e1, Magdalena Ra\u0161pli\u010dkov\u00e1 <\/strong>and<strong> Leona Kardov\u00e1<\/strong>, USB). The morning session concluded with a specialist lecture by <strong>Dr. Mari\u00e1n Luk\u00e1\u010d<\/strong> (Technical University of Ko\u0161ice), on <em>The Past and Present of Tourism Legislation in Slovakia<\/em>. In the afternoon, participants took part in a guided field trip to Bankov Forest Park with <strong>Mgr. Estera Pracuov\u00e1<\/strong> (UPJ\u0160), exploring the economic, ecological and cultural aspects of this local recreational area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday (16 October), participants embarked on a full-day excursion to the Tokaj region, including visits to Boldogk\u0151 Castle and a boat trip on the Bodrog River. The excursion combined historical and geographical context with a first-hand experience of a landscape that has shaped the region\u2019s winemaking tradition and tourist identity for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final day (17 October) featured a discussion titled <em>Get Lost the Right Way\u2026<\/em> with representatives of Local Nomad Tours Ko\u0161ice (<strong>Igor Kupec, Andrej Klobu\u0161n\u00edk<\/strong>), who introduced participants to current trends in sustainable tourism and authentic urban experiences. The final block of student presentations included topics on ecotourism (<strong>Kate\u0159ina Bu\u010dkov\u00e1<\/strong>, UWB) and cultural heritage and museology (<strong>Ad\u00e9la Kova\u0159\u00edkov\u00e1<\/strong>, UWB). After a concluding discussion, the programme closed with an informal gathering, where participants exchanged experiences and ideas for future cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blended Intensive Programme Ko\u0161ice 2025 proved to be an event that successfully linked historical research with contemporary issues of travel and mobility.
