Salisbury University graduate Andersen Herman \u201925<\/strong>, a chemistry major from Fruitland, MD, has been awarded a 2025\u201326 U.S. Fulbright Student Award<\/strong>. He will spend the coming year in the Slovak Republic conducting groundbreaking research while engaging in cultural exchange and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Herman, a native of Haiti<\/strong> who immigrated to the United States with his family at age 12, was inspired to pursue a career in medicine after his own childhood battle with malaria<\/strong>. His experiences shaped his passion for infectious disease research and his dream of becoming a physician-scientist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As part of his Fulbright fellowship, Herman will join researchers at Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University<\/strong> and the Slovak Academy of Sciences<\/strong> in Ko\u0161ice. He will conduct his research at the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences, TIP-UJ\u0160 under the leadership of Prof. RNDr. Erik Sedl\u00e1k, DrSc. and RNDr. Veronika Hunto\u0161ov\u00e1, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His work will focus on antibacterial photodynamic therapy using metal-organic frameworks<\/strong>\u2014a promising approach to combat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections and cancer<\/strong>, both major global health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond his research, Herman will also serve as a cultural ambassador.
