Expedition Antarctica 2026 continues with another chapter directly from the field. The research team has arrived on King George Island, which is one of the main logistical gateways to Antarctica. Approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Punta Arenas, Chile, the expedition encounters the reality of one of the most challenging environments on the planet.

Current events from the field are continuously monitored and documented by Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Michal Goga, PhD., who is participating in the expedition with the professional and institutional background of the Technology and Innovation Park UPJŠ (TIP-UPJŠ), under the leadership of the Director of TIP-UPJŠ RNDr. Andrej Miroššay, PhD.

King George Island is known for its rapidly changing weather conditions even during the Antarctic summer. Temperatures range from approximately –2 to +5 °C, but the decisive factor is the wind, whose average speed reaches 30–50 km/h, often with strong gusts. It is the wind that currently significantly limits the team’s movement in the field.

“We are currently on King George Island, where I would also like to collect samples if the weather permits. Today we are closed all day due to the weather. There is a color system in place – red means a strict curfew, blue only exceptions and green movement is allowed, always in groups and with a walkie-talkie,” says Michal Goga directly from the scene.

In the extreme conditions of Antarctica, high-quality equipment plays a key role. Protection from strong winds and low temperatures is provided by technical clothing from CARINTHIA, while specialized footwear for Antarctic conditions was provided by the beLenka brand. Reliable equipment is a prerequisite for the safe conduct of research activities.

Antarctica tests not only the physical endurance of the team, but also logistics, planning and adaptability. It is in such an environment that valuable experiences are created that connect science, innovation and practical solutions – in line with the mission of the Technology and Innovation Park UPJŠ.

Follow the next continuation of the Antarctica Expedition 2026.

Expedition Antarctica 2026 continues with another chapter directly from the field.
