V\u010faka pokro\u010dil\u00fdm met\u00f3dam molekul\u00e1rnej biol\u00f3gie u\u017e t\u00fato mo\u017enos\u0165 dnes m\u00e1me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the accelerated evolution of proteins in the laboratory, we can create useful new molecules that might never have arisen in nature.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature is a fascinating creator. The evolution of creatures transpires over millions of years. During this time, biological organisms experience transformation and adaptation to their environment. This process, known as natural selection, ensures the survival and reproduction of the most effective organisms. Can this process be intentionally replicated and potentially accelerated in a laboratory setting? Due to sophisticated techniques in molecular biology, this capability is already available today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V z\u00e1vere septembra 2023 vyvrcholila realiz\u00e1cia E\u00da projektu z\u00edskan\u00e9ho v r\u00e1mci Horizon Europe H2020 (H2020-Widespread-2020-05-Twinning) Podpora vysokej vedeckej kvality v oblasti \u0161t\u00fadia prote\u00ednov na v\u00fdchodnom Slovensku<\/em><\/strong>, zn\u00e1meho viac pod jeho akronymom CasProt<\/strong>. Hlavn\u00fdm rie\u0161ite\u013eom projektu bola UPJ\u0160, konkr\u00e9tne Centrum interdisciplin\u00e1rnych biovied (CIB), Technologick\u00fd a inova\u010dn\u00fd park UPJ\u0160 a Katedra biofyziky (KBF), PF UPJ\u0160. Cie\u013eom projektu CasProt bolo posilnenie vedeckej kapacity a vedeck\u00e9ho profilu UPJ\u0160 v oblasti \u0161t\u00fadia prote\u00ednov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of September 2023, we have successfully concluded the implementation of the CasProt project, which has significantly contributed to the stabilisation of CIB and its reputation in particular through strengthened collaboration with the partner groups at UZH and TUM. Besides others, the project led to a considerable increase in the impact factor of journals, in which were published works of CIB members, grant applications for multimillion projects, opening new laboratories at CIB, and the establishment of new collaborations with groups at Comenius University and the Neuroimmunology Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava (Slovakia), Loschmidt laboratories at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic), the University of Groningen (Netherlands), and the University of Bayreuth (Germany).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New laboratories for bioscience research were opened in the workplace at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University (PF UPJ\u0160) in Ko\u0161ice. Proteins as biological materials can be purposefully modified, and qualitatively completely new properties can be achieved. Currently, proteins belonging to the so-called monoclonal antibodies are practically used as approved therapeutic drugs for oncology patients or as anti-inflammatory substances. Proteins and enzymes ensure the accuracy and efficiency of chemical reactions in the human body. Scientists can change them at the molecular level and thus adapt their properties as needed. The management and the scientific staff of the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences (CIB), Technology and Innovation Park (TIP) of the Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice (UPJ\u0160) and of the Department of Biophysics (KBF), Faculty of Science (PF) of UPJ\u0160 have been trying for a long time to find and use all available possibilities for creating and improving conditions directly at their home university for the implementation of attractive science at a high level, which also realistically fulfills one of the essential missions of science: to bring benefits to the public and society. Scientists from the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences (CIB), the Technology and Innovation Park (TIP), and the Department of Biophysics, Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice (UPJ\u0160) are currently participating in the implementation of three important European biomedical projects that focus on long-term medical problems as well as the current pandemic situation. The projects are the CasProt, BioPickmol, and OPENMED projects, which are financed by the H2020 program of the European Commission and the European Structural and Investment Funds, respectively, and whose main goal is to help in the treatment of serious civilizational diseases (infectious, oncological, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative) through innovative approaches, thus contributing to the creation of conditions for improving the overall health of society.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From January 13 to January 15, 2022, the scientific symposium “Trends in Interdisciplinary Biosciences” will be held at the Grandhotel Praha in Tatransk\u00e1 Lomnica. The symposium will focus on the presentation of three important scientific projects coordinated by the Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik \u0160af\u00e1rik in Ko\u0161ice and implemented in cooperation with important Slovak and European universities and scientific research institutions. The projects solve problems in biomedical research and are financed by EU resources.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kick-off meeting of the CasProt project was held by the Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice (UPJS) as a coordinator of the project Horizon 2020 from the European Framework Program of the EU for Research and Innovation within the framework of the \u201cTwinning\u201d<\/strong> call on the 12th and 13th of October 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective of the meeting was to present and discuss all the technical and administrative aspects of the project, reach a common agreement concerning the responsibilities and duties of the leaders for each work package, to understand the linkage between work packages, and to plan activities implemented in the first period of the project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
