The Department of Criminal Law was founded together with seven other departments by the Rector of Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University upon the establishment of the Faculty of Law in 1973. In charge of the Department \u2013 the first appointed Head of Department was the external colleague, scholar, assoc. prof. JUDr. Milan \u010ci\u010d, CSc. from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in Bratislava for the period from 1st <\/sup>September 1973 to 31st <\/sup>January 1977. First full-time members of the Department as of 1st<\/sup> September 1973 were JUDr. M\u00e1ria Vorobe\u013eov\u00e1 (Hencovsk\u00e1) and JUDr. Daniel Mi\u017eenko. Taking into consideration the small number of academic staff at the foundation of the Department, the role and assistance of external teachers from other faculties (especially from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in Bratislava and Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice) was particularly significant and very decisive in the follow-up period and in relation to the formation and staffing of the Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For several years after the foundation of the Department, its activities were undertaken with the support of such distinguished external colleagues from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in Bratislava as were \u2013 JUDr. Milan \u010ci\u010d, JUDr. J\u00e1n Chud\u00edk, prof. JUDr. Eugen Hus\u00e1r, CSc., assoc. prof. JUDr. Gabriela Nik\u0161ov\u00e1, CSc., together with other prominent experts from the Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice \u2013 assoc. prof. MUDr. Jozef Kafka, CSc. and prof. MUDr. J\u00e1n Luk\u00e1\u010di. In a relatively short period of time the Department gradually expanded their workforce and engaged more full-time young generation teachers, in 1974 JUDr. Vikt\u00f3ria Va\u013eov\u00e1 and JUDr. Jozef Madliak, in 1977 JUDr. Jozef Olej, and in 1980 JUDr. Miroslav Kr\u00e1\u013e became the members of the Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position of the Head of Department has been held by the following in succession: assoc. prof. JUDr. Milan \u010ci\u010d, CSc. (from 1st<\/sup> September 1973 to 31st<\/sup> January 1977), assoc. prof. JUDr. Anton Ra\u0161la \u2013 from 1st<\/sup> February 1977, assoc. prof. JUDr. Jozef Olej, CSc., assoc. prof. JUDr. M\u00e1ria Hencovsk\u00e1, CSc., assoc. prof. JUDr. Jozef Madliak, CSc., assoc. prof. JUDr. Sergej Rom\u017ea, PhD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of time the composition of the academic staff has changed, apart from teachers who are current members of the Department, the following legal practitioners \u2013 JUDr. Tom\u00e1\u0161 \u010cver\u010dko, JUDr. Emil Dub\u0148ask\u00fd, JUDr. Miroslav Ba\u0148ack\u00fd, PhD., JUDr. Martin Puchalla, PhD., JUDr. J\u00e1n Miha\u013eov, PhD., were also former full-time employees of the Department and now hold important offices as judges, lawyers, or advisors at the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic. The Department has always favoured the idea of the involvement of specialists from legal practice in its activities; in the academic year 1987\/88 the Department welcomed JUDr. \u013dudov\u00edt Kova\u013e, an expert in criminalistics. Teaching was also conducted by the representatives of the judiciary \u2013 judges of the Regional Court in Ko\u0161ice (JUDr. Karol Ku\u010dera, JUDr. Miroslav Osif, JUDr. Ladislav Tom\u010dov\u010d\u00edk), judges of the District Court in Ko\u0161ice \u2013 okolie (JUDr. Miro- slav Ba\u0148ack\u00fd, PhD. \u2013 at present in the office at the County Court in Ko\u0161ice), and District Court of Ko\u0161ice I.
