T\u00e1to katedra sa rozr\u00e1stla a postupne roz\u010dlenila na tri samostatne katedry, a to na Katedru experiment\u00e1lnej fyziky, Katedru jadrovej fyziky a Katedru teoretickej fyziky a geofyziky. Tieto katedry boli zalo\u017een\u00e9 a veden\u00e9 tak\u00fdmi v\u00fdznamn\u00fdmi slovensk\u00fdmi vedeck\u00fdm osobnos\u0165ami, ak\u00fdmi boli prof. Vladim\u00edr Hajko (prv\u00fd dekan fakulty), prof. Juraj Daniel-Szab\u00f3, prof. Juraj Dubinsk\u00fd a prof. Tibor Kolbenhayer. Po\u010das \u0161tyridsiatich rokov svojej existencie boli tieto katedry zodpovedn\u00e9 za v\u00fdu\u010dbu v\u00e4\u010d\u0161iny kurzov fyziky v jednoodborovom i dvojodborovom \u0161t\u00fadiu. V\u00fdskum bol spo\u010diatku orientovan\u00fd na fyziku magnetick\u00fdch materi\u00e1lov a niektor\u00e9 oblasti jadrovej fyziky. Od roku 1966 sa postupne rozv\u00edjal \u2013 z iniciat\u00edvy \u0160tefana J\u00e1no\u0161a \u2013 v\u00fdskum v oblasti fyziky n\u00edzkych tepl\u00f4t. V s\u00fa\u010dasnosti je jednou z aktu\u00e1lnych t\u00e9m v\u00fdskumu pri ve\u013emi n\u00edzkych teplot\u00e1ch \u0161t\u00fadium termodynamick\u00fdch a transportn\u00fdch vlastnost\u00ed nekonven\u010dn\u00fdch magnetick\u00fdch syst\u00e9mov, najm\u00e4 n\u00edzkorozmern\u00fdch a geometricky frustrovan\u00fdch syst\u00e9mov. Treba zd\u00f4razni\u0165, \u017ee v\u00fdskum v oblasti fyziky n\u00edzkych tepl\u00f4t sa od po\u010diatku uskuto\u010d\u0148uje v \u00fazkej spolupr\u00e1ci s \u00dastavom experiment\u00e1lnej fyziky Slovenskej akad\u00e9mie vied. T\u00e1to spolupr\u00e1ca viedla k vytvoreniu Centra excelentnosti v oblasti fyziky ve\u013emi n\u00edzkych tepl\u00f4t. Vo v\u00fdskume v oblasti magnetizmu spo\u010diatku dominovalo \u0161t\u00fadium povrchovej dom\u00e9novej \u0161trukt\u00fary kovov\u00fdch feromagnet\u00edk a \u0161t\u00fadium Barkhausenovho javu v procese premagnetovania feromagnet\u00edk. Jedn\u00fdm z najv\u00fdznamnej\u0161\u00edch v\u00fdsledkov tohto v\u00fdskumu bolo jednozna\u010dn\u00e9 experiment\u00e1lne potvrdenie a teoretick\u00e9 vysvetlenie existencie negat\u00edvnych Barkhausenov\u00fdch skokov.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V 70. rokoch sa Katedra experiment\u00e1lnej fyziky r\u00fdchlo preorientovala na nov\u00fa oblas\u0165 v\u00fdskumu, a to na magnetizmus amorfn\u00fdch materi\u00e1lov. Bola to pr\u00e1ve skupina fyzikov z Ko\u0161\u00edc, ktor\u00e1 ako prv\u00e1 publikovala objav koexistencie magnetick\u00e9ho usporiadania typu spin glass s kr\u00e1tkodosahov\u00fdm feromagnetick\u00fdm usporiadan\u00edm v amorfn\u00fdch \u0161trukt\u00farach. V\u00fdznamn\u00fa a motiva\u010dn\u00fa \u00falohu pre v\u00fdskum v oblasti magnetizmu zohr\u00e1vali \u010deskoslovensk\u00e9 porady o magnetizme, ktor\u00e9 sa v Ko\u0161iciach konali od roku 1963 a ktor\u00e9 sa nesk\u00f4r pretransformovali na konferencie s medzin\u00e1rodnou \u00fa\u010das\u0165ou. Tie s\u00fa v s\u00fa\u010dasnosti vo svete zn\u00e1me pod skratkou CSMAG (Czech and Slovak Conference on Magnetism). V s\u00fa\u010dasnosti je hlavnou t\u00e9mou v\u00fdskumu v oblasti magnetizmu \u0161t\u00fadium s\u00favislosti medzi \u0161trukt\u00farou a magnetick\u00fdmi vlastnos\u0165ami nanokry\u0161talick\u00fdch materi\u00e1lov a \u0161t\u00fadium n\u00edzkorozmern\u00fdch magnetov.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okrem v\u00fdskumu v oblasti fyziky tuh\u00fdch l\u00e1tok, ktor\u00fd sa uskuto\u010d\u0148oval v spolupr\u00e1ci s Fyzik\u00e1lnym \u00fastavom \u010ceskoslovenskej akad\u00e9mie vied, sa v spolupr\u00e1ci so Slovenskou akad\u00e9miou vied \u0161tudovali aj probl\u00e9my fyziky z oblasti fyziky vysok\u00fdch energi\u00ed, relativistickej fyziky a kozmick\u00e9ho \u017eiarenia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vedecko-v\u00fdskumn\u00e1 \u010dinnos\u0165 katedry jadrovej fyziky v prv\u00fdch rokoch bola zameran\u00e1 pod veden\u00edm Juraja Dubinsk\u00e9ho na problematiku v\u00fdskumu kozmick\u00e9ho \u017eiarenia \u2013 \u0161t\u00fadium \u010dasov\u00fdch vari\u00e1ci\u00ed intenzity kozmick\u00e9ho \u017eiarenia pomocou meran\u00ed na Zemi \u2013 Lomnick\u00fd \u0161t\u00edt. Polo\u017eil z\u00e1klady \u00fa\u010dasti slovensk\u00fdch fyzikov a technikov aj na dru\u017eicov\u00fdch experimentoch v r\u00e1mci medzin\u00e1rodn\u00e9ho programu Interkosmos. Nadviazal d\u00f4le\u017eit\u00e9 medzin\u00e1rodn\u00e9 kontakty roz\u0161\u00edren\u00edm spolupr\u00e1ce so S\u00daJV v Dubne, Rusko (vtedy ZSSR), \u010d\u00edm zabezpe\u010dil rozvoj fyziky Spolupr\u00e1ca s S\u00daJV prer\u00e1stla do \u0161irokej medzin\u00e1rodnej kolabor\u00e1cie EMU01 a nesk\u00f4r do experimentu BECQUEREL realizovan\u00e9ho na Nuklotr\u00f3ne v S\u00daJV v Dubne.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paralelne sa rozv\u00edjala metodika bublinov\u00fdch kom\u00f4r na \u0161t\u00fadium interakci\u00ed z\u00e1porn\u00fdch pi\u00f3nov s prot\u00f3nmi a jadrami a v inverznej kinematike interakci\u00ed \u013eahkych jadier s prot\u00f3nmi.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Za kvalitat\u00edvne nov\u00fa \u00e9ru vo vedeckov\u00fdskumnej pr\u00e1ci katedry je mo\u017en\u00e9 pova\u017eova\u0165 roky 1990 a 1991, ked katedra za\u010dala rozv\u00edja\u0165 \u00fa\u010das\u0165 na v\u00fdznamn\u00fdch experimentoch NA34 a WA94 na \u0161t\u00fadium produkcie lept\u00f3nov\u00fdch p\u00e1rov a podivn\u00fdch \u010dast\u00edc v zr\u00e1\u017ekach jadier v CERNe, \u017deneva. V tom istom roku bol zaveden\u00fd \u0161tudijn\u00fd odbor biofyzika. V tej dobe bol v\u00fdskum v oblasti biofyziky orientovan\u00fd najm\u00e4 na \u0161t\u00fadium \u0161trukt\u00fary nukleov\u00fdch kysel\u00edn. V roku 1998 sa spomenut\u00e1 katedra rozdelila na dve katedry (Katedru biofyziky a Katedru jadrovej a subjadrovej fyziky), \u010d\u00edm sa po\u010det katedier fyziky na fakulte zv\u00fd\u0161il na \u0161tyri.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Od roku 1999 sa na Katedre teoretickej fyziky a geofyziky za\u010dal formova\u0165 t\u00edm, pracuj\u00faci v oblasti astrofyziky, v d\u00f4sledku \u010doho sa t\u00e1to katedra v roku 2002 premenovala na Katedru teoretickej fyziky a astrofyziky. V tom istom roku bol vytvoren\u00fd \u00dastav fyzik\u00e1lnych vied, ktor\u00e9ho akademick\u00fdmi pracoviskami sa stalo v\u0161etk\u00fdch p\u00e4\u0165 katedier fyziky, teda Katedra biofyziky, Katedra fyziky kondenzovan\u00fdch l\u00e1tok, Katedra jadrovej a subjadrovej fyziky, Katedra teoretickej fyziky a astrofyziky a Katedra didaktiky fyziky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>K v\u00fdrazn\u00e9mu skvalitneniu pr\u00edstrojovej infra\u0161trukt\u00fary \u00dastavu fyzik\u00e1lnych vied a celkovej prestavbe laborat\u00f3ri\u00ed doch\u00e1dza po roku 2002, ke\u010f sa otvorili mo\u017enosti pod\u00e1vania projektov na vytv\u00e1ranie centier excelentnosti, spo\u010diatku na univerzitnej \u00farovni, neskor\u0161ie na z\u00e1klade v\u00fdzvy APVV VVCE a n\u00e1sledne od roku 2007 aj na \u010derpanie finan\u010dn\u00fdch prostriedkov zo \u0161truktur\u00e1lnych fondov E\u00da. Tak postupne za spolu\u00fa\u010dasti \u00fastavu vznikli Centrum fyziky ve\u013emi n\u00edzkych tepl\u00f4t, Centrum kryofyziky a kryonanoelektroniky, Centrum pokro\u010dil\u00fdch fyzik\u00e1lnych
