On 5th May 2020 we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of Botanic Garden in Košice. Initially the Botanic Garden was a part of the University of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering and later of further institutions. Since 1964 it has belonged to the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice. The history of the botanic garden in Košice is composed of both better and worse periods. In the duration of its existence its position, goals and the development intentions were changing. Nowadays Botanic Garden of P. J. Šafárik University represents a scientific and educational department of the University. In a wider sense it is an important educational and cultural institution of the region of east Slovakia with both national and international aspects. The Botanic Garden plays its roles in the education of university students as well as primary and secondary school pupils, but also in the popularization of scientific knowledge from the fields of biology and ecology among wider population. In the sense of international Convention on Biological Diversity the main contents of the activities of the Botanic Garden is the scientific and research work aimed at the concentration and the study of the phytogenefund of both endangered and common species all over the world with special stress to the endangered species of Carpathians and Pannonia. Therefore, the anniversary conference: “70 years of Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice” is focused on the history and the present of the botanical research and nature conservation. The conference is held under the auspices of rector of P. J. Šafárik University, prof. RNDr. Pavol Sovák, CSc. and the invited lectures will be presented by important personalities from the field of botany from Slovakia and abroad. Therefore, as a director of the Botanical Garden I am taking the liberty of inviting you to this conference in order to spend both working and ceremonial moments together and to commemorate the 70th anniversary of this institution in a respectable manner.
