As part of the APBC program, undergraduate and graduate students participated in the Bayreuth International Summer School on Biofabrication. Through lectures delivered by leading national and international researchers, students gained insights into the latest developments in materials science, biofabrication, and tissue engineering.

During the summer school, Prof. Thomas Scheibel presented recent developments in recombinant spider silk materials for medical applications and tissue engineering. Assoc. Prof. Martin Humenik introduced participants to the emerging field of DNA-assisted cell modification and immobilization, demonstrating how these technologies enable precise microtissue engineering and pave the way for next-generation biomedical applications. In addition, hands-on training in the laboratories of the Department of Biomaterials, supervised by experienced postdoc Dr. Lisa Zeußel and PhD student Nadine Best, gave participants practical experience with advanced techniques including 3D bioprinting, electrospinning, and cell immobilization, as well as state-of-the-art characterization methods such as advanced microscopy and flow cytometry.

The event provided an excellent platform for scientific exchange, interdisciplinary learning, and international networking, inspiring the next generation of researchers in biofabrication and regenerative medicine.
