Doc. RNDr. Michal Goga, PhD. from the Technology and Innovation Park UPJŠ presented the importance of scientific research in the extreme conditions of Antarctica to the general public this week in the regional magazine Regina of Slovak Television. In the interview, he not only discussed his participation in the international expedition, but also the importance of long-term monitoring of climate change for the future of the planet.

Research on the Coldest Continent

Antarctica is one of the most extreme environments on Earth, but it also plays a key role in understanding global climate processes. Doc. Goga explained in the program that this continent functions as a sensitive indicator of environmental changes. “What is happening in Antarctica has an impact on the entire world,” he emphasized during the interview.

His scientific work focuses on collecting and analyzing data directly in the field – from measuring environmental parameters to long-term monitoring of changes in natural ecosystems, specifically on research on mosses and lichens. The results of such research are key to understanding the dynamics of climate change and its impacts.

Expedition as a team scientific mission

Participating in an expedition to Antarctica requires not only professional knowledge, but also a high level of preparedness and the ability to work in challenging conditions. Doc. Goga explained that it involves complex teamwork of scientists, technicians and logistics workers.

Everyday life at the research station is strictly organized and adapted to extreme climatic conditions. Researchers face low temperatures, strong winds and isolation from the outside world. Nevertheless, it is an irreplaceable experience that allows you to gain unique scientific knowledge directly from the field. You can watch the report at this link from 41:28 – 51:30
