Project FunThink

FunThink – Enhancing functional thinking from primary to upper secondary school

The project share the common vision that (mathematics) education can be significantly improved by enhancing functional thinking.

Grant Number: 2020‐1‐DE01‐KA203‐005677

Call: KA203 – Strategic Partnerships for higher education

Topic: KA2 – Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices

Total Budget: 443 543,00 €

The main goal of the project is to improve students’ functional thinking. In order to achieve this goal, learning environments have been developed that can be implemented from primary to secondary school to promote students’ functional thinking. These learning environments innovatively combine elements such as learning with digital tools, real-world situations and embodied activities through inquiry. All of these elements have been shown to make learning more effective. These learning environments are complemented by methodological guides for teachers. This will ensure that functional thinking is systematically developed between different school levels, so that the different aspects of the concept of function are complementary and interconnected, rather than taught in isolation. As part of the project solution, a course has been developed for pre-service mathematics teachers to enable them to effectively develop functional thinking in their future students through the learning environments created. The course includes video recordings of classroom implementations of the learning environments to promote reflection and professional exchange among future mathematics teachers on the development of students’ functional thinking.
