Department of Financial Law, Tax Law and Economy – Education

The Department provides compulsory courses, compulsory elective courses and elective courses to law students at the Faculty. Apart from its specialized courses, in the past the Department offered courses in Budgetary Law, Customs Law, Accountancy for Lawyers and many more. Current courses conducted by the Department include Financial Law, Financial Law I and II, Tax Law, Tax Law I and II, Fundamentals of Economy, Basics of Management, Comparative Tax Law within the Erasmus+ programme, and as of the next academic year the courses will comprise Tax Law of the European Union and Law of Financial Markets. It must be added though that in connection with law courses provided by the Department, the Department’s overriding concern is to interconnect the results of their scientific research with teaching and this way support the link between theory and practice in respective disciplines.

During its 22 years of independent existence, the members of the Department have attained remarkable academic achievements ranking the Department among the leading and respected workplaces not only at the Faculty of Law in Košice but also within the eastern European area / in V4 countries.

In the first place, members of the Department have significantly progressed with their academic qualifications; as to the composition, the Department has one professor, 3 associate professors and all remaining members of the Department are PhD graduates.

The academic community has also acknowledged the professional expertise, personal qualities and managerial skills of several members of the Department and appointed them into leading positions of the management of the Faculty and University. After the establishment of the Department in 2001, several members of the Department acted in the positions of a Rector (V. Babčák) and as Deans (M. Bujňáková and since 2019 also M. Štrkolec) or as a Vice-Rector M. Bujňáková. The position of the Chairman of the Academic Senate was held by M. Bujňáková and by J. Sábo in the past.

Further achievements of the members of the Department pertain to academic courses provided by the Department, namely, as of the academic year 2010/2011, Tax Law was included among the state examinations in the field of law as an elective course. Since then, 526 students have opted for state examination in Tax Law, 497 students have successfully passed the exam.
