The Department of Constitutional Law and Administrative Law has been pursuing its activities under its current official name since the academic year 2004/2005. Prior to this year, the Department operated under the designation of the Department of State Law and Administrative Law. After its foundation in 1973, the Department achieved several milestones in its development, these especially concerned the academic staff, teaching process, but also the research projects the members of the Department worked on. The unique character of the Department resides in its double specialization created upon its establishment with the aim to entail teaching and research activities in the disciplines of Constitutional Law and Administrative Law.
As was the case with other departments, after the establishment of the Faculty in 1973, many colleagues from the Law Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava assisted with teaching and the Department of Constitutional Law and Administrative Law established excellent cooperation with the Department of Constitutional Law and the Department of Administrative Law and Environmental Law that has persevered through the years.
The first Head of Department was prof. JUDr. Rudolf Trella, CSc., who was in charge of the Department until 1983, the Secretary of the Department was JUDr. Mikuláš Mikolaj. Assistant professors during the early years of the Department were JUDr. Igor Palúš, JUDr. Ľudmila Somorová, later JUDr. Ján Čollák and JUDr. Mária Kiovská, who later played a crucial role in later developments of the Department. In the following period, the position of the Head of the Department was held by JUDr. Jozef Koreň, (1979 – 1983), prof. JUDr. Igor Palúš, CSc. (1983 – 1991; 1997 – 2004), JUDr. Mikuláš Mikolaj, CSc. (1991 – 1994) and assoc. prof. JUDr. Ľudmila Somorová, CSc. (1994 – 1997; 2004 – 2015).
Academic courses at the Department were conducted by external colleagues (for example, prof. JUDr. Stanislav Matoušek, Dr. Sc., assoc. prof. Laurinec Káčer, CSc., assoc. prof. JUDr. Michal Gašpár, CSc., JUDr. Július Horváth, JUDr. Ján Jacko, JUDr. Július Mikša, JUDr. Štefan Mošon, JUDr. Gabriel Dzureka, JUDr. Jaroslav Chovanec, CSc.
