During the first academic year 1973-1974 of the independent Faculty of Law at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, eight departments were created altogether, one of them was the Department of Theory and History of State and Law. In the academic year 1990-1991, the Department was divided into two separate departments – Department of Theory of State and Law and Department of History of State and Law.
The first academic official acting as the Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law was at the time of the establishment of the Faculty of Law assoc. prof. JUDr. František Červeňanský, CSc. and the first assistant professor from 1st September 1973 JUDr. Milan Gejdoš, CSc.
In the following period, several Heads of Department were appointed to oversee the work at the department as follows: JUDr. Gertrúda Železkovová, CSc. (1976-1979), prof. JUDr. Jozef Dzugas, CSc. (1979-1987), assoc. prof. JUDr. Peter Mosný, CSc. (1978-2005) who was also authorized to manage the new separate Department of History of State and Law after the split in the academic year 1990-1991. The Head of Department as of 2005 was Assoc. Prof. JUDr. Vladimír Vrana, PhD. At different periods of its existence, the Department also employed JUDr. Blažena Antalová, JUDr. Janka Porvažníková, JUDr. Milan Sudzina, JUDr. Tomáš Čverčko and JUDr. Jozef Kirst. In the 1970s, the Department of Theory and History of State and Law also engaged external colleagues, including assoc. prof. JUDr. Florián Sivák, CSc., JUDr. Peter Blaho and JUDr. Štefánia Mertanová.
