Defending Science in Slovakia

1minút, 35sekúnd

The Faculty of Science, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, expresses its full support for the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) and for all scientists in Slovakia. We distance ourselves from the aggressive, disparaging, and false statements directed at the teams entrusted with the analysis of Covid-19 vaccines; such statements go beyond the limits of factual discussion, damage the reputation of scientific institutions, undermine trust in facts, and ultimately endanger the health of all citizens of the country.

We consider it unacceptable to label scientists as “potential perpetrators” or “charlatans” and to question their work without evidence or professional review. Personal opinions are not facts or proof. It is especially problematic when the work of colleagues is disparaged by an employee of the SAS who simultaneously serves as a Member of the European Parliament – such conduct undermines trust in the institution and weakens the authority of research teams.

We emphasize that this kind of rhetoric contributes to the outflow of young talent and weakens the country’s ability to develop and to respond to crises. Based on the long-standing results of the SAS institute entrusted with the analysis, we are convinced of the high technical quality and scientific relevance of its findings for the Government of the Slovak Republic.

We call for respect for evidence and professional work not only in science, but in public life in general; for transparent publication of methodology and results with proper professional review; for responsible and restrained communication without personal attacks; and for active protection of academic integrity and the safety of researchers.

As a faculty that educates future scientists, teachers, and professionals, we will continue to stand by an evidence-based approach, critical thinking, and open, cultivated discussion. We value the statements of academic institutions that have publicly defended the principles of evidence-based science, and we fully share their appeal.
