Biomedical Innovations of the UPJŠ in Košice at the Sense4Health Conference

2minút, 17sekúnd

Košice is becoming a major hub for biomedical innovation, thanks in part to collaboration between the academic and technology sectors. The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ in Košice, University of  Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, together with their industrial partner Deutsche Telecom IT Solutions (DT IT) Slovakia, are actively involved in developing innovative solutions in the field of digital health through the Innovlab platform.

One of the results of this collaboration is the “S2D app” project, which combines research on electrochemical sensors, modern IT technologies, and artificial intelligence with the aim of bringing faster, more accessible, cheaper, and personalized diagnostics directly to the patient. The project was presented at the Sense4Health conference in Košice on April 16, 2026, attended by representatives from universities, research institutions, and technology companies. The Faculty of Science, UPJŠ in Košice was represented at the conference primarily by Associate Professor Ivana Šišoláková, Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry,  Institute of Chemical Sciences and Dr. Radka Gorejová from the same department, who presented the development of biodegradable biomaterials for medical applications.

A key component of the project is the development of multisensor diagnostic solutions that enable the monitoring of biological parameters—such as antibiotic, cholesterol, and insulin levels—directly at the point of care. The event also featured the ceremonial unveiling of a unique SECM electrochemical scanning microscope at UPJŠ, the first device of its kind in Slovakia.

The collaboration between UPJŠ in Košice and DT IT Solutions Slovakia also confirms that linking cutting-edge academic research with technological practice creates opportunities for solutions with a real impact on healthcare and quality of life. Projects such as the S2D app demonstrate that UPJŠ in Košice is home to young scientific talents capable of conducting research at an international level and delivering innovations with global potential. It is precisely this combination of expertise, creativity, and interdisciplinary collaboration that creates an environment in Košice capable of generating modern technological solutions for the future of medicine.
