The Interaction of Borrowing and Word Formation is an edited volume published by the prestigious publishing house Edinburgh University Press and comes as a result of international cooperation of top team of the Faculty of Arts of UPJŠ in Košice Onomasiology – word-formation – typology (OST).
Doc. Mgr. Renáta Panocová, PhD., the vice-dean for international relations of the Faculty of Arts of UPJŠ and a member of the OST top team, together with Univ. Prof. Dr. Pius ten Hacken from Leopold-Franzens-Universität in Innsbruck, are co-editors of the book.
“The volume is focused on research in borrowing and word-formation as competitive naming strategies in the context of language contacts,” explains the linguist Renáta Panocová, adding that the book offers a selection of detailed case studies of ten European languages.
“Some case studies are based on data of selected dialects and minority languages which point to the interaction between word borrowing and formation, others include a historical perspective, referring for instance to medieval Latin,” explains Renáta Panocová.
The edited volume is monothematic and is divided into three successive parts. The authors of chapters are prominent morphologists working in the USA and at several European universities, e.g. in Greece, Italy and Portugal.
Of special importance are the introductory chapter, entitled Word formation, borrowing and their interaction, in which the editors put the following chapters into the context of a theoretical framework, and the final, fourteenth chapter, entitled Trends in the interaction between borrowing and word formation, where Renáta Panocová and Pius ten Hacken offer generalisations resulting from the individual case studies.
The volume follows earlier work on the onomasiological theory of neoclassical word-formation and borrowing, which is one of the fundamental fields of research of the OST top team and which is dealt with in detail by doc. Mgr. Renáta Panocová, PhD., in particular in her monograph Categories of Word Formation and borrowing. An Onomasiological Account of Neoclassical Formations (Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2015) and in her chapter “Neoclassical compounds in the onomasiological approach” in the edited volume The Semantics of Compounding published by Cambridge University Press in 2016.
