Research Institutions: The approaching anniversary of the Battle of Mohács in 1526 has prompted further research into the conditions in
the Kingdom of Hungary at the border between the Middle Ages and the modern period. The urban elites also deserve attention, all the more so as they are a little-studied issue compared to the national politics and nobility of the time. The aim of the project is therefore to research, analyse and interpret the phenomenon of elites in selected cities, especially in Košice, Bardejov and Banská Bystrica, with a focus on the Jagiellonian period (1490-1526), with a possible overlap before and after the above-mentioned chronological range. The central research questions concern the origins, social networks and strategies, as well as the level of education of the leaders of the urban communities at the end of the Middle Ages, i.e. on the threshold of the changes subsequently brought about by the rise of state power, the Reformation, humanism and other factors.

Abstract: EURIDICE undertakes to build the social innovators of the future with advanced digital technologies, with an emphasis on the societally highly influential sectors of Education, Communication, and Culture. The skills needs of such social digital innovators cross disciplines. One cannot properly contribute to digital innovation, we believe, if one has either a purely technical understanding of digital technology, or in contrast a purely non-technical non-ICT disciplinary view on things. In the EURIDICE approach, students acquire core technical and engineering knowledge and hands-on experience regarding advanced digital technologies, by following an Informatics-oriented track of advanced digital technology and engineering (esp. AI, ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity), tailored to students with non-ICT backgrounds. Advanced digital technologies impact society in various fundamental ways, and this calls for contributions, perspectives, and analyses of digital challenge themes. This requires an interdisciplinary approach fromvarious perspectives: law, humanities, social sciences, philosophy, computer science and artificial intelligence. This is what EURIDICE is going to provide.

Abstrakt: The aim of the project is the study, analysis and interpretation of the social background of the Holocaust on the example of specific typologically different cases that are connected with the anti-Jewish policy in Slovakia in the years 1938-1945. We will pay attention to the Holocaust environment at the level of a city, with a specific focus on social mobility as well as on the image of the Holocaust and its transformations depending on the alternating state regimes and the emphasis on the relationship between members of the elite and the racially persecuted population. We expect a significant shift in knowledge, especially in the field of research of the social environment of the Holocaust, towards the issue of local aggressors and forms of assistance to the Jewish population, and also within the framework of research into the transformation of images of the Holocaust in Slovak society.

Abstract: The project creates a supra-institutional platform for in-depth research and a comprehensive elaboration of the history of Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party, one of the most prominent political entities operating in Slovakia in the 20th century. The ambition of the research team, composed of historians, political scientists and culturologists, is to capture the history of Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party as a dynamically developing object and subject of politics in the domestic and international framework and to create a comprehensive synthetic work on the history of HSĽS. In the process of solving the project, it is also planned to publish two university textbooks – an overview textbook on the basic line of HSĽS history and an annotated anthology of sources on its history, supplemented by other scientific research, publishing, pedagogical and popularization activities.

Abstract: Nowadays, the study of the history of ideologies in European historiography belong to topics that are quite popular, this is based on a variety of political and social phenomena. In the project, we focus on comparing two ideological-political concepts – Czechoslovakism and Yugoslavism, whose intention was to create a unified political nation in Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia in the interwar period. Their role underwent a major transformation after World War II, and our task is to focus on transforming the concepts by regime change in Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia after the Second World War. We also want to focus on research, analysis and interpretation of specific forms and types of cooperation in the cultural, social and economic fields in the project in the form of scientific articles. The result of the project will be a collective monograph prepared on the basis of archival research, which should represent a pioneering work in the whole of the Czechoslovak environment.

Abstract: The presented project builds on the intentions of the previous two VVVGS – PCOV projects: History of UPJŠ and Historical Digital Archive (HiDA) I. and History of UPJŠ and Historical Digital Archive (HiDA) II. and is their natural continuation. It is based on the results of previous research on sources for the history of university education in Košice, which brought knowledge about the storage of individual types of sources in archives and memory institutions in the Slovak Republic and Hungary. Since these sources are stored and inventoried in the mentioned institutions, a suitable solution for their use for the needs of historical research and access is the creation of a digital archive, the long-term aim of which is to collect digitized copies of all available sources on the history of UPJŠ and its historical predecessors, their processing in the form of metadata and archival aids and finally making it available to the professional and wider public in the form of a user interface. The presented project focuses on the pilot phase of HiDA, which consists of the digitization and creation of metadata of selected source files and the creation of a functional digital repository for the needs of project administrators, which will also be the main output of the project. The project team consists of members of the Department of History FF UPJŠ, who have experience in creating the Complex Memory Portal PamMap (www.pammap.sk) and will collaborate on the HiDA project with the system administrator from the Center for Information and Communication Technologies UPJŠ.

Abstract: The point of this interdisciplinary team of historians, archaeologists, monument preservationists, and human geographers is the creation of a new platform for urban history – an online accessible and multilingual Comprehensive Memory Portal on town history (in first phase dealing with Bratislava and Košice). This applied digital output innovatively connects three approaches: (1) cartography, (2) encyclopaedia, and (3) database. A test version has already been created by the leader of the project, doc. Juraj Šedivý, PhD. (www.PamMap.sk). Two research teams will work also on creating classical historical atlases of Bratislava and Košice. These are among the principal outputs of European urban historiography (e.g. Germany nearly 300 such atlases, Austria nearly 100, there are such atlases in all of Slovakia’s neighbouring countries).

Abstract: This project features curriculum creation, 3 teacher workshops and 5 presentations for students and the public based on letters written to Jozef Tiso (1939-1944). It will support marginalized groups and foster a culture of integration and promote American art and culture, exposing Slovak audiences to the American tradition of storytelling and American literature. In our recent Small Grant, we saw students and adults connect with Holocaust history in a unique way. The program opened people’s minds and brought archival documents to life. We thought to ourselves, since informing audiences through stories is this powerful and effective, why not replicate this technique and bring it to the classroom in a comprehensive and systematic way? US and Slovak educators and experts will engage in positive collaboration on this project.

Abstract: The Velvet Revolution has a key impact on and influenced the historical consciousness of the population, which has had a multi-generation overlap to the present. Therefore, the broader contextual background and events of November 1989 have, in addition to the Region in cooperation with the Library of Ján Bocatius, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the National Memory Institute and Radio and Television of Slovakia. In addition to commemorating the November revolutionary events, the exhibition emphasized the socio-cultural impact just mentioned and focused on developing the five dimensions of historical consciousness among the target audience (identity, historicity, memory, space, time) using a wide portfolio of presented material, including interactive and information technology elements. The aim of the project of the same name is to create a multi-layered, interactive and multimedia study material. Its electronic version will present in a transformed, didactically modified form the guiding concept of the exhibition, its content and objectives. At the same time, it will be enriched with theoretical inputs into the issue of historical consciousness development with connection to public space, with special focus on university students, but also primary and secondary school scholars.

Abstract: The key objective of the activity is the organisation of a scientific workshop and the framing and conceptualization of the theme – modernization in urban space, which will serve as a basis for discussion about possible research approaches in the comparative context of Slovakia and Norway. The parallel objective of the activity is to prepare a strategy for heuristics of specific project schemes and challenges in accordance with the research theme. A timetable for bilateral reporting on the state of heuristics and current challenges will be defined. Other goals include discussion about possibilities of development of bilateral pedagogical activities at the level of lectures, seminars etc. As a tool will be used comparison of study programs, scientific-pedagogical profile of both departments and offer of study subjects. The comprehensive aim of the activity is to build on the current cross-border cooperation and strengthen it at the level of research, project activities, mobility and education.

Abstract: “The semiological, historical and cultural aspect of national identity on the example of the Visegrad Group countries” is a grant implemented by the Department of Landscape and Cultural Heritage of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow. The aim of the project is to learn about the history and traditions of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. These countries belong to the Visegrad Group, which was established 28 years ago in 1991. As part of the program, we will consider the common heritage of our countries as part of a research group consisting of scientists and students from our countries (project website: https://unityv4.pl/).

Abstract: The aim of the project is to study, analyze and interpret particular cases within a specific phenomenon connected to persecuting of Jews in Slovakia during the years of 1938 – 1945. Our attention will be devoted to Jewish families and various strategies of survival of the Holocaust faced with various reactions of members of the urban elites.The research team will particularly focus on theoretical concepts and their subsequent application on selected cases in Slovakia. We suppose the significant advancement of knowledge in research of the social context of the Holocaust, especially towards the issue on the one hand of the local aggressors, on the other hand of the forms of aid for the Jewish inhabitants.
Interactive Exhibition “You Make the History”

The main objective of the project is the organization of an interactive exhibition, through which the “live” source material will be communicated to the visitors and will be made accessible to the key milestones in the history of Slovakia in the 20th century linked to the year 2018. In this connection, the events of 1918 World War I and the emergence of 1st Czechoslovakia), 1938 (Munich Agreement, Declaration of Autonomy of Slovakia, Vienna Arbitration), 1948 (Communist Totalitarianism) and 1968 (Invasion of the Warsaw Treaty). The exhibition itself, in addition to making these events available to target groups, also aims to popularize historical science as well as to promote higher education not only at the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, but also at the Faculty of Arts and at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Another, no less important, partial goal is to promote the openness of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice towards the ideas of organizing alternative tune-up events on its soil and thus the overall positive approach of the university to actively cultivating the philosophy of academic life.
Innovative teaching ancient history at universities. University textbook “History of Late Antiquity (Chapters II.)”

The project aims for creating a university textbook History of Late Antiquity (Part II). The study and scientific research on the history of Late Antiquity, which is conducted in academia, currently records an increasing interest at universities in Slovakia and abroad (including both students and researchers).The textbook on History of Late Antiquity follows its predecessor textbook entitled selected Chapters I (2015 FF UPJŠ), presenting in a chronological way the political-social and socialreligious events in the period of 395 – 476. The textbook is designed especially for students who aim for acquiring basic knowledge about this historical period. The publication will contribute to the development of education and the improvement of the educational process at the faculties of Slovak universities. It will be an essential educational tool, in a way an exclusive one, that provides students with an innovative way to the latest findings of scientific research within the multidisciplinary approach to the key events and important persons of late-antiquity period, to which Slovak students have not otherwise access due to their limited language competencies. This textbook aims for improving studies of ancient history in Slovakia via innovating new forms and methods of access to the exploration of the period and by presenting the latest foreign literature.
Greek Catholic Church in the Occupied Territory of Czechoslovakia in the Years 1938 – 1945

Occupation of Czechoslovakia in the years 1938 – 1945 created new conditions for the work of the Greek Catholic Church, which was organized as part of Czechoslovakia in Prešov and the Diocese of Mukachevo. Along with Sub-Carpathia and Slovakia’s territorial withdrawal, the Greek Catholic parish and the bishop’s residence Užhorod were in Hungary and only one Greek Catholic parish in the Czech Republic again in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. In different conditions they continued to perform their functions, which deserves attention, since the authors focused only on the territory of Slovakia. Therefore, the ambition of project promoters to carry out basic research in the archives of central and regional archives and the subsequent analysis of source material as well as the published literature to formulate its own interpretation of problems not only in general terms, but to present all aspects of the position and development of the Greek Catholic Church in the territories occupied Czechoslovakia.
Innovative teaching ancient history at universities

The goal of the project is to organize a three day workshop at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts at the Šafárik University in Košice aiming for the innovation of the teaching the history of Antiquity at universities. The workshop, which is planned for 10.-11. September 2018, will bring novel approaches to the university education. The participants at the workshop will be mainly university teachers of ancient and early-medieval history, classical language and theology from Slovak universities, universities from Czech Republic and students of UPJŠ of department of history, classical philology, philosophy, political science, also students of theology and secondary school teachers of history and of the Latin language from Košice and Prešov region, and they will develop knowledge and skills related to the practical usage of the interpretative and analytical methods developed by Professor Hans H. Ørberg in the field of research and study of the history of Antiquity and the history of the early Middle Ages. The workshop will contribute to improving the quality of education not only at the Department of History, but also at other faculties of the UPJŠ, as well as other universities in Slovakia. It will be for the first time that the practical usage of the most recent didactical methods and tools (the so-called Ørberg) will be introduced to university teachers, secondary school teachers and students in Slovakia. The workshop will provide the students in an innovative way with the latest findings of scientific research within the multidisciplinary approach to the key events and important persons of the late Antiquity period, to which Slovak students have not otherwise access due to their limited language competencies. Abstract: The programme “History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century” (urbanHIST) is run by a consortium of universities in co-operation with institutions and companies operating in the fields of planning, urban design, architecture, management, history etc. The Consortium is formed by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (Germany), Universidad de Valladolid (Spain), Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia) and Blekinge Tekniska Högskola (Sweden). The local director of the Slovak part of the programme is Professor Martin Pekár, the chief of our department. UrbanHIST is an integrated research and doctorate programme funded by the European Union in the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action. It aims to develop and sustainably promote a joint understanding of 20th century European Urbanism. UrbanHIST offers a unique opportunity to altogether 15 early stage researches to investigate various topics related to comprehensive studies on the history of european urbanism in the twentieth century. These researchers will receive multidisciplinary training from high-profile academics and practitioners and will be awarded a double degree of two of the four universities (more information).

Tendencies of Development of Ethnic Relations in Slovakia: Comparative Research of Ethnic Issues in 2004 – 2020

The first objective of the project is to analyze the development of national relations between 2004 and 2016, in which it intends to exmine: development in the field of national relations, the strategy of Slovak national politics, goals and intentions of political parties depending on ethnicity, demographic development of national minorities at the beginning of the 21st century, history of national minorities, the study of historical memory with a special focus on historical events with an ethnic background (Slovak-Hungarian relations, Ruthenian-Ukrainian relations, relations of majority and minority, Gypsy issues, new minorities, migration, security…). The second aim of the project will be the realization of an interdisciplinary empirical research focusing on the theoretical, methodological and practical issues of ethnicity and national relations (with the preservation of the methodological procedures applied in empirical research from 2004).

Yugoslavism versus Czechoslovakism : The History of Conflicting Ideologies in Central and Southeastern Europe

International Workshop attended by prominent Czech, Slovak and foreign balkanists and historians should bring scientific dialogue, which would mean a new perspective on previously published research of the issue. The result will be a set of published studies on selected topic in the journal Porta Balkanica (CZ), or City and History / Mesto a dejiny (SVK).

The ambition of the project’s researchers is to elaborate the role and position of significant and interesting personalities from the history of Kosice within the research concept “History and Memory”, who were important for the forming of the city historical memory. Selected personalities will be examined in historical contexts from the end of the 14th century until present. The project directly links to our ending project, which has been dedicated to historical milestones and institutions in the history of Košice. Selected personalities will be, therefore, also examined in their context to the historical developments of major institutions of state administration, public administration, cultural, religious, educational, scientific and economic institutions, societies and political parties operating in Košice, important for the historical memory of the city. The aim will be an appreciation the importance of selected personalities, their position in the context of local (Košice), regional (Hungarian or Slovak) history and European history. The goal is to create the prerequisites and the basis for the future processing of the synthesis of the Košice history.

The aim of the project was to create a common basis for researching of activity of the power-repressive apparatus in Slovakia in the period between 1939 – 1945 at the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, which was in the process of constitution. In the research each member of group will pay attention to their own part of the ptoject. We expected creation of two scientific monographs (the biography of Gejza Fritz and the publication focused on the land reform in the years 1939 to 1945 with regard to Eastern Slovakia) and the dissertation oriented on activity of the power-repressive apparatus in Slovakia in 1939 – 1945.

This proposed research study is a project of graduates and postgraduates – who with the help of experienced researches – will try to prepare a detailed analysis of the development of the school system in the region of Eastern Slovakia. Since the topic of the regional school system in the region of Eastern Slovakia has not been researched yet. The task of the comparative team will include the research of this topic based on new research material which will be carried out by various methods and also the interpretation of the results obtained and their presentation in scientific journals and a collective monograph. One of the objectives of the project is to analyse various aspects of the educational process in the towns and villages of the Eastern Slovakia in the years 1918 – 1948 and to reach the starting points which will enable to get more detailed and more complex view not only on the development of the school system in the Eastern Slovakia during this particular period.

The aim of the activity is to innovate three study programs and to create five accreditation files of new study programs at the Faculty of Arts UPJŠ. The main function of the activity is the implementation of the European Union’s strategies (social, linguistic and cultural integration of the individuals into society) implemented as an extension of the offer of study programs at the UPJŠ and significant improvement of the level of study in three study programs through innovation in international cooperation. Outcome of this activity will be provided in cooperation with internationally accredited experts, accreditation files of new study programs of UPJŠ as well as by new educational program, published monographs, textbooks and by lectures given by internationally recognized experts. At the same time, the study literature will be purchased, which will be provided to the students of the newly created study programs after the finalization of the accreditation files.

The project aims at the research of fundamental aspects in the development of civilization from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The historic period of Late Antiquity and its transition to the Early Middle Ages is the subject of a lively discussion in the present research world. The period of Late Antiquity is often referred to as ‘a ground-breaking’ or as a historic landmark in the periodization of the history between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The objective of the project will be a research, analysis and an unbiased examination of fundamental aspects of the development of society in ancient times as a ground-breaking period, as well as a subsequent relation to the Middle Ages. In discussion preceded by the research to date, specific features shall be examined, upon which one can consider the period of Late Antiquity to be a historic landmark, pertaining to questions whether fundamentally new structures in the state and policy were developed.
