About the Department of History

1minút, 30sekúnd

The Department of History was established on 1 October 2008. The interest and support of the management of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, its Faculty of Arts and the support of the city of Košice were of fundamental importance for the establishment and development of the Department. The building process of the Department was entrusted to prof. PaedDr. Štefan Šutaj, DrSc., under whose leadership an intensive process of forming a new scientific-pedagogical workplace began. From the beginning of this process an emphasis was placed on close cooperation with the established Košice historical community. The Department was able to rely both professionally and personally on the institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and their infrastructure in Košice (Institute of Social Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and a local department of the Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences), and on other institutions existing in Košice (East Slovak Museum, State Archive of Košice, State Scientific Library, Technical Museum, etc.). After the successful accreditation of study programmes, the first students of the Bachelor’s degree in History and the first PhD student in Slovak History joined the faculty in the academic year 2009/2010. The seat of the Department is the Plató building in the campus of the Faculty of Arts of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

By the decision of the Dean of the UPJŠ Faculty of Arts No. 6/2017, two sections were established at the Department as of 1 December 2017:

Section for Central and Southeastern Europe History Research (headed by Prof. PaedDr. Štefan Šutaj, DrSc.)
Section for Urban and Regional History Research
(headed by Mgr. Peter Fedorčák, PhD.)
