urbanHIST consortium is very proud to announce the result of the dissertation thesis defense within urbanHIST project – on 16 December 2020, the doctoral candidate Ms. Azmah Arzmi successfully defended her dissertation thesis “Reinterpreting Marzahn, Berlin & Petržalka, Bratislava: From Process Of State Socialist Utopia To Utopia Of State Capitalist Process”. Within the project, this was already the second successfully defended dissertation; however, the first one with the direct participation of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.
Ms. Arzmi was a PhD candidate at Bauhaus Universitaet Weimar, Germany as well as at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, Slovakia where she was enrolled as an external PhD student at the Faculty of Arts, Department of History, in the study programme Slovak History. Ms. Arzmi took every opportunity to regularly consult with her supervisor as well as her colleagues from the Department of History, she visited the Faculty of Arts not only as a member of urbanHIST consortium within regular Network-Wide Workshop Weeks, but more importantly, as an independent and autonomous researcher, within her training secondments and research stays.
The defense procedure took place in a hybrid format, with some members of the committee participating in person at Bauhaus Universitaet Weimar, Germany and with the rest of the committee and the public participating online, through direct streaming from Bauhaus Universitaet Weimar. UPJŠ was represented in the committee by Prof. Dr. Štefan Šutaj and Prof. Dr. Martin Pekár as well as by Prof. Dr. Matej Spurný (Charles University), Ms. Arzmi’s supervisor at UPJŠ.
Based on the bilateral co-tutelle agreement, the PhD. candidate Ms. Azmah Arzmi will be awarded the double PhD. degree from both universities.
