Our students help with the health monitoring of homeless people

    Students of the Faculty of Medicine of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice help people without a home in a project called  „Homeless not hopeless“. They perform regular screening in a facility for people without home Oáza near to Košice. Their 10-member team has made 3 visits in this shelter, during which the students of General medicine UPJŠ FM took an anamnesis of clients and did a basic medical examination.
    „We measure blood pressure and glycemia, eventually we dress wounds and superficial infections, for example, state after amputation of limbs, burns, or insect bites. Our team detects a state of teeth and analyze global health condition of every patient and according to this, we decide who needs to visit a doctor in out-patient department and who needs to be hospitalized“ said 4th-year student of the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ  Ester Tomajková, who is a member of Academic Senate of UPJŠ, Faculty of Medicine and the Association of Medical Students in Košice.
    This beneficial activity of students of the UPJŠ FM organizes the Club of human rights and peace of the Association of Medical Students in Košice in cooperation with the Foundation DeDo and the Slovak specialist in the field of tropical medicine Dr.h.c. prof. MUDr. Vladimír Krčméry Dr.Sc. who beside medical leadership of medical students realized rapid-testing of COVID-19 of Oáza´s clients with his team.

    The last visit of students of the  UPJŠ FM in the shelter was on Thursday, August 6, 2020 and the next visit is planned in early September. The medical students have helped in this way twice per month since autumn 2020 and this long-term project is without a time limitation.
