Forty-eight elementary school pupils visited our Faculty as part of the project University without Borders, UPJŠ in Košice on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. The participants of the event were welcomed on the premises of the oldest Faculty of UPJŠ by the Vice-Dean Silvia Timková, M.D., PhD., who introduced them to the activities of one of the best educational institutions in Slovakia and the PR manager RNDr. Jaroslava Oravcová, PhD. presented to the children a varied program that awaited them that day at the Faculty of Medicine. Then they moved to workplaces, where eight interesting activities were prepared for them …

They got acquainted with “Heroes in Action” at the Department of Nursing Care. They learned about the individual health professions, which at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic participated in the care of patients in hospitals and social facilities or at home.
Mysterious microbes – bacterias invisible to the naked eye – were discovered at the Department of Medical and Clinical Microbiology in an activity called “Where in the World Are They?“. They observed them with the help of a microscope, they learned to inoculate microorganisms on the nutrient medium in Petri dishes.
They learned about the existence and significance of plant pigments during the activity “Magic with Plant Dyes” at the Department of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry.
They talked about the importance of digestive enzymes at the Department of Experimental Medicine in the activity “How our digestion works”. They also saw a demonstration of more complex digestion-what was left of oatmeal or a piece of bread after the addition of a mixture of digestive enzymes.
At the end of the day, within the program of the 1st Stomatology Department of UPJŠ FM and UNLP “Let’s look at teeth“, they found out what constitutes human teeth, and how they can be protected from dental plaque and caries with proper hygiene.
As part of the afternoon program, they learned how to “Eat healthy and Live Healthy“. Ivan Majerčák, M.D., PhD. from the Center for the Treatment of Obesity explained how it works in the human body with energy intake and expenditure, what is considered a risky food and what a healthy diet, why obesity is a disease, and how it can be treated, and it was a big surprise for children finding that fatness causes more than two hundred diseases…
