The 2nd Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University (UPJŠ) and Louis Pasteur University Hospital (UNLP) Košice is a modern academic department that integrates specialized patient care, medical education, and scientific research. The department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, researchers, and administrative personnel who work closely together to provide comprehensive, high-quality patient care.
As a university department, it actively implements the latest evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches while contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge through research and education. The department is primarily focused on gastroenterology, hepatology, and internal medicine.

Our Achievements

  • A leading academic department providing undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral (PhD) education in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology.
  • Internationally recognized research in liver diseases, portal hypertension, liver cirrhosis, acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), inflammatory bowel diseases, and digital medicine.
  • Active partner in major European research consortia, including PREDICT, MICROB-PREDICT, ALB-TRIAL, and PROPHIL, funded by European Union programmes and dedicated to the development of personalized diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for advanced liver diseases.
  • Co-authorship of landmark scientific publications that have significantly advanced the understanding of the mechanisms underlying acute decompensation of cirrhosis, systemic inflammation, and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). These findings have been published in leading hepatology journals and have contributed to international clinical practice guidelines.
