Educational characteristics:

  • Teaching General Medicine and Dentistry in the doctoral study in both Slovak and English languages;
  • Postgraduate study in Surgery;
  • Specialised study in the fields of Surgery and Gastroenterological Surgery.

Scientific research characteristics:

The 1st Surgical Department staff focuses their research on the use of stem cells and their application in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, the possibility of liver regeneration in liver damage and after extensive liver resection to promote wound healing. The further research objective pursues the possibility of using nanotechnology in surgery. The Department is also focused on the study of biostimulation wound healing by laser radiation at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels.

The Department focuses its research on the possibilities of surgical treatment of oncological diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas.

The 1st Surgical Department is involved in the educational programme in Laparoscopic Surgery using a virtual reality simulator. The Department is also an accredited workplace of pan-European accredited educational programme of LSS (Laparascopic Surgical Skills) as one of the 4 accredited centres in Europe (Eindhoven, Lisbon, Trondheim, Košice).

Treatment and preventive care characteristics:

The 1st Surgical Department staff focuses their research on the research of modalities of surgical treatment of oncological diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands.

Part of the team pays attention to research into advanced mininvasive surgery and kidney transplantation from both alive (laparoscopic and open surgery), deceased donors and multiorgan explant.
