The new Teaching Hospital with Outpatient Clinics in Trieda SNP 1 Street was founded in April 1981, where the first Clinical Lead of The Unit of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation was MUDr. Kornélia Kunayová, CSc. In 1989 MUDr. Emilián Gramata became a Clinical Lead of the unit and later he was followed by MUDr. Juraj Hura.

In May 1996 the unit was renamed to the Department of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation and from 1999 its name is 1st Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine according the national concept of the teaching programme. Doc. MUDr. Jozef Firment, PhD. after the successful interview was nominated as a formal Head of the department.

MUDr. Antigona Studená, CSc. was in the position of Deputy Head of Education until 2005 and since this time this position has been belonging to MUDr. Judita Capková, PhD. In May 1998 after 10 years being in Hospital in Snina, MUDr. Monika Grochová, PhD. became a Clinical Lead for the department. Since 2009 she has been working as Assistant Professor and MUDr. Jana Šimonová became a new Clinical Lead of the department.

In Medical Faculty of UPJŠ Anaesthesia and Resuscitation was part of the Surgical teaching programme until autumn of 1990, when the Dean`s office took a decision for the separate compulsory teaching programme for Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation for the General Medicine with the final examination. This teaching programme was commended to MUDr. Antigona Studená, CSc.

Originally it was one term teaching course for the 4th year of the Medicine study consisted from 12 hours of theoretical lectures and 12 hours of practical seminars. Since the year 1991/1992 it has been a part of the 5th year of Medicine study. Because of a significant interest of the students we have increased the number of practical seminars to 28 in 1996 and later on also we have increased the number of theoretical lectures to 28 hours in 1998. During the practical lessons the students have opportunity to practice CPR on training manikins and since 2013 also on SimMan. The Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation has been part of the teaching programme also for the Dental Medicine students since 2006. The department also provides the teaching of First Aid as a part of the 1st year Medicine study for both, the General and the Dental Medicine and also in Bachelor`s and Master`s degree studies. In June 2010 The Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic issued the certificate of accreditation for our University Hospital to teach the postgraduate specialised qualification in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. In 1998 the team of our department released the textbook for the students of medicine. In 2001 and in 2004 Firment, Studená et al brought out the University textbook „Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine“, with contribution of Slovak specialists and also the doctors from our department. In 2008 the monography „One day surgery anaesthesia“, by doc. MUDr. Jozef Firment, PhD. a MUDr. Judita Capková, PhD. was issued.

Since 2003 in our department the airway workshops and since 2007 workshops about updated CPR techniques have been organised for the doctors and ambulance crews. In January 2009 the First Kosice Regional Anaesthesia Course was organised together with the Department of Anatomy of Medical Faculty of UPJŠ which continues till presence. Also, since 2009 our department have been organising postgraduate courses of CEEA (Committee for European Education in Anaesthesiology) with regular publishing of Collection of lectures. In May 1999 the 1st Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine organised the 6th National Annual meeting of Slovak Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine and in May 2001 helped to organise Transplant congress.

Our department is focused on diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, optimisation of artificial ventilation in critically ill patients, their nutrition support with parenteral and enteral nutrition, also is focused on using different techniques of regional anaesthesia and actively participate on transplant programme of the hospital.
