The main research focus of the Department is monitoring systemic complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnea. The Department set up a research “Unit for the Study of Metabolic Disorders in Patients with Respiratory Diseases” in which tests are performed, such as indirect calorimetry, tracking basal energy metabolism, spiroergometric tests, euglycemic hyperinsulin lock, and fatty tissue biopsy.
Further research of the Department is associated with the implementation of the “Fluorescent Diagnostics and Photodynamic Therapy of Lung Cancer” programme in cooperation with the East Slovak Institute of Oncology, the UPJŠ FM Institute of Biology, and the Institute of Biophysics at the UPJŠ Faculty of Science. The above research plans have been supported by the VEGA and APVV grant schemess and those of the Ministry of Health. In the year 2009, the Department became the CEVA Centre of Excellence as part of the project “Centre of Excellence for Research on Atherosclerosis and Its Complications – Cardiac and Cerebral Infarction (CEVA)”, supported by the Ministry of Education from the EU Structural Funds.
