Research activities focus on studying the impact of hypoxia on cardiovascular and metabolic parameters in diseases of the respiratory system, with the main research interest being systemic complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnea. Another key research focus is monitoring the impact of non-invasive ventilation and respiratory support with high-flow oxygen on hemodynamic and metabolic parameters, both in their acute use and in long-term use. The clinic’s staff has published more than 70 papers in impact journals in these areas, as well as in the issue of genetically determined susceptibility to COPD and lung tumors, which ranks the department among the highest quality clinical research departments in Slovakia.

The main research focus of the Clinic of Pneumology and Phthiseology is:

1. monitoring the impact of chronic intermittent and chronic permanent hypoxia on cardiovascular and metabolic parameters in diseases of the respiratory system. The subject of research interest is primarily systemic complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnea.

2. monitoring the impact of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) on hemodynamic and metabolic parameters, both in its acute use and in its long-term use in home conditions.

In previous years, the clinic has managed to equip the “Laboratories for Translational Research of Respiratory and Metabolic Diseases”. The laboratories were created out of the need to implement scientific objectives “from the bench to the bedside” (from the laboratory to the patient) oriented towards the study of the impact of hypoxia on metabolic processes from the level of cells, through the level of tissues and organs to the level of the organism (patient). The uniqueness of the clinical research workplace lies in the parallel monitoring of numerous physiological functions of the organism during wakefulness and during sleep, with their subsequent computer processing, and with a connection to the basic research laboratories (molecular-biological and biophysical laboratories of the Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ and Faculty of Sciences UPJŠ).
