The Institute of Nuclear and Molecular Medicine comprises two worksites located in Košice and Banská Bystrica. In terms of the number of gamma cameras and the annual volume of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, it is currently the largest nuclear medicine centre in Slovakia. It provides the widest range of SPECT/CT and PET/CT examinations in the country. The Institute also provides treatments using open radioactive emitters, both on an outpatient basis and, in Košice, as inpatient therapy. The inpatient unit comprises six comfortable single rooms and two double rooms, all specially equipped to comply with radiation protection and hygiene requirements.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, and the Institute of Nuclear and Molecular Medicine provide undergraduate teaching in nuclear medicine and radiation hygiene in both Slovak and English, with a teaching allocation of 1/1 in both semesters. The Department participates in scientific research projects and is an accredited training centre for doctoral studies as well as for specialist training in endocrinology. We collaborate with other clinical and preclinical departments of the Faculty of Medicine of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. We are involved in the assessment of doctoral and habilitation theses in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and serve as editors of international scientific journals.
The principal areas of professional and research interest of the Department of Nuclear Medicine and the Institute of Nuclear and Molecular Medicine include:
- Metabolic and receptor-based SPECT/CT imaging in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumours and disorders of the central nervous system.
- The use of PET/CT in oncological and neurological diagnostics.
- Imaging methods in the diagnosis of inflammatory disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
- Specialised functional techniques for assessing gastrointestinal motility in diabetic neuropathy.
- The contribution of two-phase bone scintigraphy to the diagnosis of occupational disorders of the elbow.
- Evaluation of the clinical value of SPECT/CT in vertebral disorders and other diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
