The Department of Medical and Clinical Microbiology (DMCM) of UPJŠ LF provides educational and scientific-research activities in the field of medical microbiology and immunology. DMCM provides teaching of medical microbiology and immunology for students of General Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Physiotherapy, as well as Laboratory Examination Methods and Bioanalytical Diagnostics in Healthcare. Practical exercises are focused on the diagnostics and differential diagnostics of medically significant causative agents of infectious diseases.
The scientific and research activities of the DMCM focus on the study of virulence and resistance of clinically significant isolates of Clostridioides difficile, representatives of the order Enterobacterales, and representatives of the genera Staphylococcus and Enterococcus. In selected isolates of carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria and vancomycin-resistant enterococci isolated from patients in a hospital environment, the genetic basis of resistance to antibacterial agents is investigated. In addition, research activities are oriented towards testing and integrating modern molecular biology methods (ultrafast PCR and real-time PCR) for the detection of viruses with pandemic potential (coronaviruses, influenza viruses).
