MIKOLÁS V. (1991): Lajos Thaisz – The founder of scientific botany in Kosice. – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 3-16. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: Biography of L. Thaisz, Hungarian botanist, who was in charge of the Kosice branch of Institute for Seed Control in Budapest in 1907 – 1910, is briefly outlined. The attention is paid to his research work of the former Abauj-Torna district (today it is divided between Hungary and Slovakia). His work on the field of economic botany is also briefly sketched. His work in pure botany is reviewed in more detail. Sorbus thaiszii, a taxon named after L. Thaisz is discussed, as well as Festuca wagneri, a species of fescue, in the description of which L. Thaisz has participated. Thaisz’s selected bibliography closes the paper.

SCHOLZ H. and MIKOLÁS V. (1991): The weedy repesentatives of Proso Millet (Panicum miliaceum, Poaceae) in Central Europe – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 31-41. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: The Proso Millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) is divided in three subspecies:
1) susbsp. ruderale, in some literature mentioned as a progenitor of subsp. miliaceum, a subspecies widely distributed all over the world as a weed today and growing in Central Europe as well.
2) subsp. agricolum, subsp. nov., a weedy member of the (proso) millet with persistent glumes in fruits that easy fall off, and somewhat diffuse and nodding panicle, which is known in Central Europe from Alsace, Austria, Bavaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, NE Italy and Slovenia. This subspecies spreads quickly in maize fields treated with special herbicides. It has probably evolved from cultivated (proso) millet by a mutation process.
3) subsp. miliaceum which includes all cultivated forms and noncultivated ones with grains falling off hard but having weedy ecology. Both weedy (and ruderal) subspecies have grey-olive to blackish grains, and subsp. agricolum is somewhat intermediate in grain characteristics between subsp. ruderale and subsp. miliaceum.

KORMUTÁK A. (1991): Utilization of introduced species of firs (Abies sp.) in artificial hybridization. – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 113-118. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: The hybridological relationships within selected group of fir species (Abies sp.) were tested by means of artificial hybridization of five European and two North American representatives of firs. The highest degree of crossability was typical for the interspecific combination of A. concolor x A. grandis reaching on average 3.80 %. The mutual compatibility of European representatives of firs has varied considerably ranging within the limits of 0.51-2.61 %. Of the eight interspecific combinations tested the heterotic growth was displayed by the three combinations of species (A. concolor x A. grandis, A. cephalonica x A. nordmanniana, A. pinsapo x A. alba) whose progeny had surpassed at the stage of 1-year old seedlings the offspring of the corresponding maternal species from self-pollination.

DITMAR O. (1991): In vitro regeneration of Curly birch, Betula pendula var. carelica. – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 119-124. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: Shoots regeneration and multiplication was achieved by using axillary buds and nodal segments from adult curly-birch as initial explants for the establishment of tissue cultures. Bud explants were grown on WPmedium with 1 mg.l-1 BAP and 0.05 mg.l-1 NAA. Shoot multiplication was very efficient on the mentioned medium with 0.5 mg.l-1 BAP and reduced level of inorganic nitrogen. During shoot multiplication adventitious root development was noticed under cytokinin treatment.

CHUBIRKO M. (1991): Embryology of some representatives of introduced Caesalpinioideae. – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 125-130. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: Embryology of four species of Caesalpinioideae (Gymnocladus dioica C. Koch, Gleditschia triacanthos L., Cercis siliquastrum L., C. chinensis Bunge) is described. The anther wall consist of the epidermis, the fibrous endothecium, two middle layers and secretory tapetum. The pollen grains are bitegmic crassinucellate anatropous in the Cercis species and anacampylotropous in Gymnocladus dioica and Gleditschia triacanthos. Female gametophyte conform to the polygonum type. In G. dioica the second meiotic division in the dyad is variable and results in the development of both bisporic and monosporic types of embryo sac. The antipodial cells are ephemeral. The embryo development corresponds to the Onagrad type. The endosperm is of the nuclear type.

TOKÁR F. (1991): The utilization of exotic woody plants in forest management of lowland areas in Slovakia. – Thaiszia, Kosice, 1: 131-136. – ISSN 1210-0420.
ABSTRACT: In the paper, growth and production results as well as cultivation possibilities of exotic woody plants (Quercus rubra L., Juglans nigra L., and Pinus nigra Arnold) in lowlands of Slovakia are surveyed. Quercus rubra L. at the age of 34 years reaches the volume stock of 294.48 m3.ha-1 and the above ground biomass stock of 199.93 t.ha-1 in pure stands of the group of Carpineto-Quercetum forest stands. Juglans nigra L. at the age of 32 years reaches 343.03 m3.ha-1 of the volume stock and 134.52 t.ha-1 of the aboveground biomass stock in pure stands of the group of Ulmeto-Fraxinetum forest types. Pinus nigra Arnold at the age of 100 years reaches the volume stock of 464 m3.ha-1 at 30 % representation in mixed stands of the group of Querceto-Fagetum forest types in the region of the Malé Karpaty Mts.

ABSTRACT: One of the possible variants of the population analysis of the endangered plants is suggested on the basis of ephemeroid geophytes studies of the East Carpathians flora. This represents complex bioecological investigations based on the synthetic approach to the population studies. The program of the investigations includes ecological and phytocoenotic studies of the species, the structure and demography of the populations, their biomorphological peculiarities, life cycles, reproductive biology, intraspecific differentiation and population parameters monitoring. Scientific principles of conservation of the biodiversity of rare and disappearing species of wild flora are formulated.
