Race To Zero

1minút, 36sekúnd

The strategic plan “UPJŠ – Green University” corresponds very closely with the decision of the university management to participate in the global initiative against climate change and with universities and colleges in the global campaign

On 9.8.2021, the university officially signed up to a commitment to permanently reduce its carbon footprint. On 19.8.2021, EAUC (The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges), on behalf of the Race to Zero campaign for universities and colleges, confirmed our application with the definition:

  • COMMITMENTS, GOALS – commitment at the director level of the organization to achieve (net) zero greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible, by mid-century at the latest, in line with the global effort to limit warming to 1.5 °C. By setting an interim target for the university to achieve in the next decade, reflecting best efforts toward a fair share of 50% global CO₂ reductions by or beyond by 2030, identified in the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C.
  • PLANS – explain, within 12 months of accession, what measures will be taken to achieve temporary and long-term commitments, in particular in the short to medium term.
  • PROCESSES to take immediate action towards achieving (net) zero in accordance with meeting the set interim targets.
  • DISCLOSURES – Commit to the University to report publicly at least once a year on the progress made in relation to the interim and long-term objectives, and also the measures being taken.

By signing up for the Race to Zero campaign, UPJŠ in Košice has committed itself to respect five principles:

  1. Leadership governance – Governance and responsibilities
  2. Involvement of actors – Cooperation
  3. Education and enlightenment at UPJŠ
  4. Research and knowledge exchange at UPJŠ
  5. Campus management – Management of premises and workplaces of UPJŠ
