Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) is an internationally recognised research university and is one of the most successful scientific research institutions in Slovakia, not only in terms of financial support for scientific research, but also in terms of the results achieved in the field of creative activity. At UPJŠ we have created conditions for the development of modern educational and scientific centres, enabling comprehensive training of students and the development of modern directions of science, research and development. Modern equipment, cutting-edge technologies and international cooperation. This is how research is at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

We are able to set priorities and secure funding for projects without forgetting about the ethical and social dimension of our results. The basic credo of the university is reflected in the UPJŠ statute and code of ethics and is closely linked to the principles of good practice in scientific publishing, the rules for assessing plagiarism and the principles of good research practice.

In funding research, we preferentially focus on foreign sources, especially from EU programmes and domestic grant agencies, such as the Scientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic and the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Agency for Research and Development Support. UPJŠ holds a certificate of competence to carry out research and development.

The scientific teams of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice are actively and successfully involved in international research infrastructures through the programmes of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Horizon Europe, ESFRI and other EU programmes, which are based directly on cooperation.

At UPJŠ a comprehensive system of support for science and research is functioning successfully. The internal scientific grant system of UPJŠ is a combination of several programmes that we have gradually developed and improved, and currently these programmes support all stages of scientific work – from student projects to excellent top scientific teams.

Another important aspect of scientific work is the development of academic staff. At Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, we have adopted rules and procedures guaranteeing transparency and openness of the procedure for teachers, researchers and PhD students on equal terms for all applicants, objective, professionally informed, consistent and unambiguous verification of the fulfilment of the set requirements and criteria.

In today’s world, the mobility of researchers is an integral part of good science. By funding postdoctoral fellowships, we purposefully develop scientific research and development at individual UPJŠ units, support the career growth of young researchers, increase the attractiveness of both scientific careers and the mobility of postdoctoral fellows.

UPJŠ scientists and students are often nominated for prestigious domestic and foreign awards for their discoveries and merits. At home, we annually award two Rector’s Prizes of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice for significant contributions in the field of science and research to teachers and researchers and PhD students at the University.

We also recognise personalities who have made a significant contribution to the spread of the ideas of humanism, democracy and understanding between peoples through their life’s work in the fields of education, science, art or politics, and whose significance has extended beyond the borders of the country in which they are active and who have also contributed to the development of science and education.

The long-standing tradition of UPJŠ is matched by the high level of education and scientific research, which is the result of several years of efforts of the generation of teachers and scientists working at our University. Doctoral studies combine the aspects of education and research. In European terms, doctoral students are early-stage researchers whose responsible and high-quality education is a guarantee for the sustainability of progress in science and research.

Project support requires an up-to-date overview of national and international programmes and calls, which is essential for the submission of projects, and also informational, methodological and administrative assistance to university departments, which is very much needed if the university is to be successful in this field.

The Technology Transfer Centre is an autonomous part of UPJŠ that provides services and information to support the transfer of knowledge and technology and creates opportunities and an environment for their dissemination in line with the fulfilment of the University’s mission to increase its competitiveness and attractiveness to students, staff and the public. An overview of their activities and services can be found on their website.
