Guide to authors

Original scientific works, short communications and reviews (botanical taxonomy, phytocoenology, ecology, phytogeography, etc.) in maximum extent of 30 pages (the Editorial Board may accept longer papers) should be written in English (with exclusion of descriptions of new taxa and syntaxa) in the following layout: a) Title of paper; b) The name and surname of the author (or authors); c) Author’s contact address with phone/fax number and e-mail address if possible; d) Abstract (300 words as a maximum); e) Keywords (three to eight words); f) Text of the paper; division of the paper is proposed by the author, experimental works should be divided as follows: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion; g) Acknowledgement (if any); h) References.

Papers should be submitted to the address: thaiszia@upjs.sk (Thaiszia - Journal of Botany, Botanical Garden of UPJŠ, Mánesova 23, SK-04352 Košice, Slovakia). Submission of a paper is taken to mean that the results reported have not been published and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Authors will be notified about the receipt of the paper. All papers are peer reviewed by at least two reviewers. If the paper is returned for revision, the authors should submit a revised version within 6 months. Accepted papers are printed usually within 12 months. Thaiszia – J. Bot. is prepared for press by means of a computer system; authors will obtain proofs with lineart figures. The senior author will receive the offprints free of charge. Number of offprints will be decided by the Editorial Board. The author has permission from the publisher to make further copies at the author’s expense.

Manuscript incl. tables and figures should be sent as a file (files) via e-mail. Use Arial (or Times New Roman) types (do not use Courier types). WORD 2000 (or WORD 97) for WINDOWS (files *.doc or *.rtf ; and *.tif, *.jpg for figures) files of the final version are most welcome.

Tables should be prepared separately, table heading should be written above the table, designated by abbreviation Tab. (e.g. Tab. 1). Tables should be used only when essential, and arranged with regard to the dimension of the printed page. Tables should not include vertical lines.

Figures must be high quality camera-ready or pen-and-ink drawings. All figures should be accompanied by a descriptive phrase typed on a separate sheet. All figure captions may be given on the same sheet. The size of figures submitted should not exceed 205 x 290 mm. Drawings and photographs should be accompanied by a scale bar. Colour photographs are published only when author shares the cost. The figure number and the author’s name should be written on the back of all figures in soft pencil.

Literature references. In the text references are given by the name of the author and the year of publication (in brackets). Author’s name has to be written in SMALL CAPITAL letters or double underlined in manuscript. In the list of references only the cited works are mentioned. Authors’ names are listed in alphabetical order. The following format is to be used: ROBSON N. K. B. (1977): Studies in the Genus Hypericum L. I. Infrageneric classification. – Bull. Brit. Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. 5: 291-355. The place of publication (precedes volume) is given, only in the cases of homonymic journals. Journal titles should conform to Lawrence G. H. M. et al. (1968): Botanico-Periodicum-Huntianum, Pittsburgh, and its supplement (1991). In the case of books, the title is followed by the data on edition and division of work: Ed. 2., Vol. 3, and, following after the dash the location of edition. References to compendia and proceedings are introduced by the word In:, according to following example: FAVARGER C. (1984): Cytogeography and Biosystematics. – In: GRANT F. W. (ed.): Plant Biosystematics, p. 453-476. – Toronto etc. Titles in languages not using Latin alphabet should be transliterated. Transliteration of Cyrillic should follow ISO-1 standard.

All plant names must follow the accepted nomenclatural rules and cited with their author; e. g. Knautia slovaca ŠTĚPÁNEK. Abbreviations of the names of authors of plant names should follow R. K. BRUMMIT & C. E. POWELL (1992): Authors of plant names, Kew. Author’s name has to be written in SMALL CAPITAL letters or double underlined in manuscript. Once cited in the text, the following reference to the species name may be written without authorship (K. slovaca). Taxon names should be written in italic (preferably) or underlined by wavy-line in manuscript. In reviews with large number of taxa or in phytocoenological works it is possible to mention the nomenclatural references work used, without mentioning the authors of taxa. As to syntaxa, similar rules should be used.

Botanical Garden of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice

Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University came into existence in 1950. It was situated in periphery of the town in the part Dolný Bankov, locality Červený breh. At the time of its establishment its area represented 36 ha including 2400 m2 of heated greenhouses. Professional orientation, structure, material and technical facilities changed several times since its establishment. Since 1959 Botanical Garaden represents a part of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. In the organizational structure of the University it represents research and educational workplace. At the present time its area represents 30 ha and its working staff is composed of 40 employées.

Botanical Garden is visited by approximately 50 thousands of visitors each year. Particular activities in the Botanical Garden are realized at five departments: Department of Tropical and Subtropical Vegetation, Department of Ornamental Flora, Department of Arboretum, Department of Autochtonous Flora and Documentation and Department of Administration and Operation.

Scientific activities are aimed at the study of biology of endangered and protected species of the flora of East-Slovakian region, synanthropization and anthropic questions concerning environment conservation and formation. In this context Botanical Garden publishes scientific periodical THAISZIA, Journal of Botany. The periodical is registered in scientific databases and since 2009 it has been indexed in SCOPUS database. Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University has a herbarium collection consisting of over 40 000 herbarium specimens. Educational activities in Botanical Garden are aimed at teaching of botanical and ecological disciplines in different degrees of education.

Cultural and edificational activities are carried by stable exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, open-door days, activities aimed at biota cognition, environmental activities aimed at environmental awareness and sustatinable development.

Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University co-operates with both Slovak and foreign institutions, represents scientific workplace of CITES, rescue centre of Environmental Agency of Ministry of Environment and is a member of BGCI and EuroGard.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

In the year 2010 Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University commemorates 60th anniversary of iťs foundation. At the same time, the year 2010 is announced by United Nation Organization as International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).
Since the time of its establishment Botanical Garden has been given a task to collect, study and spread the knowledge on botany among as big part of population as possible. Simultaneously with the knowledge about plants, the information on biodiversity, its importance and conservation was spread.
The above mentioned facts were a stimulus for organizing of the international conference: „Species and Community Diversity (Research, Education, Presentation, Conservation)“, which will deal with particular problems and allow to adopt conclusions influencing future activities in botanical gardens.

KAKTUS club

Klub je dobrovoľná nezisková spoločenská organizácia združujúca záujemcov o pestovanie kaktusov a sukulentov z Košíc a okolia. Počiatky organizovaného kaktusárenia v Košiciach sa datujú do r.1965, kedy sa okolo pracovníka BZ p. Jozefa Hečka sústredila skupina nadšencov, ktorá stála neskôr pri zrode Klubu na jednej strane, ale na druhej strane sa zaslúžila významne aj o budovanie dnes už najväčšej a najkrajšej kaktusárskej expozície na Slovensku.

    Neskôr sa krúžok stal súčasťou významného brnenského Klubu Astrophytum. Na roky 1967-1989 prešiel Klub pod Zväz záhradkárov a ovocinárov. V r.1990 získal Klub nového patróna - Dom pionierov a mládeže, ale po návrate p. Hečka do služieb BZ sa aj Klub vrátil na svoje zakladajúce pôsobisko.
     Klub kaktusárov má dnes po 40 rokoch rôznych foriem svojej činnosti 35-40 členov. Pracovné stretnutia sa konajú každý prvý utorok v mesiaci o 17,30 hod. v posluchárni BZ. Súčasťou stretnutí sú výmeny skúseností aj prebytkov vlastných výpestkov, pravidelné dražby a tomboly. Veľký úspech majú prednášky slovenských aj českých významných pestovateľov - účastníkov expedícií do celého sveta, spojené s diaprojekciami. Vyvrcholením klubovej činnosti sú pravidelné jarné a jesenné výstavy spojené s poradenstvom a predajom prebytkov, konané dnes už tradične v Rotunde na Zbrojničnej ulici v Košiciach. Výstavy sa stali už plánovaným doplnkom vyučovania botaniky na mnohých základných školách.
    Pre utužovanie kolektívu Klubu a rodinných príslušníkov uskutočňujeme 1-2 krát ročne Kaktusárske guláš - párty na záhrade pri skleníkoch našich členov. Pre záujemcov o návštevy sú k dispozícii po telefonickom dohovore skleníky p. Dusku, Bokoteja, Rohrera a Šebeja.

Klub bol založený v januári 1989, ako zložka základnej organizácie Slovenského zväzu ochrancov prírody a krajiny pri BOTANICKEJ ZÁHRADE UPJŠ v Košiciach. V súčastnosti má klub 34 členov, ktorí pracujú v celom východoslovenskom regióne. Botanická záhrada poskytuje klubu veľmi dobré zázemie. V tomto prostredí sa členovia klubu oboznamujú s praktickými úkonmi, ktoré súvisia s pestovaním bonsajov (tvarovanie, rez, presádzanie, atď.) Potešiteľné je, že v radoch členov klubu sú aj mladí ľudia, dokonca žiaci základných škôl. BONSAI KLUB KOŠICE je členom Slovenskej bonsajovej asociácie. Každoročne dvakrát na jar a v jeseni organizuje Bonsai klub špecializované výstavy, buď v priestoroch botanickej záhrady, alebo vo Východoslovenskej galérií v Košiciach. Výstavy sú spojené s ukážkami tvarovania a ošetrovania bonsajov. Návštevníci majú možnosť zakúpiť si hotové výpestky, alebo mladý materiál, ktorý potom pestujú podľa svojích predstáv. Na výstave je možnosť oboznámiť sa so 170-200 exponátmi. Jarná výstava, ktorá je súčasťou dní Košíc začiatkom mája, predstavuje bonsaje na počiatku vegetácie so sviežou zeleňou listov a pestrou paletou kvetov. Na jesennej výstave, začiatkom októbra, majú dominujúce postavenie bonsaje s krásnym sfarbením olistenia a pôsobivymi plodmi. Bonsai klub organizuje, prípadne pomáha organizovať výstavy aj v ďalších miestach regiónu, napríklad Kežmarok, Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica, Humenné atď.. The range of growing trees contains: Acer (ginnala, campestre, buergerianum, palmatum, tataricum), Cotoneaster, Crataegus, Fraxinus, Quarcus, Fagus, Carpinus, Syringa, Tilia, Malus, Prunus, Euonymus, Wisteria, Liriodendron, Ulmus, Pyracantha, Lonicera, Hedera, Gingko, Picea, Pinus, Taxus, Juniperus, Thuja, Larix, Cedrus, Punica granatum, Olea europea, Rosmarinus, Oestomeles, Myrsine, Myrtus, Cuphea, Sageretia, Carissa, Coprosma, Portulacaria, Ficus benjamina, Crassula, etc.
BCK is interested in contacting Bonsai growers and Bonsai organisations in other part of the world. The first step is due to Index Seminum of Botanical Garden of UPJŠ in Košice, Slovakia.
