On 17 September 2012, the University opened the academic year 2012/2013 by welcoming students, employees, academic officers, guests and worthies of public and private sphere in prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc. in his speech especially welcomed freshmen at the university and wished them great study success. Within the program of the ceremony, the Golden Medal of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University was awarded to Dr. Jitse P. van Dijk for long-term active and successful cooperation with UPJŠ and for development of education and science in the field of health social aspects.
During the event, the new professors of our university were introduced:
- prof. RNDr. Martin Bačkor, PhD. – the field of Plant Physiology;
- prof. MUDr. Zuzana Gdovinová, CSc. – the field of Neurology;
- prof. MUDr. Pavol Jarčuška, PhD. – the field of Public Health;
- prof. Ing. Mária Mareková, CSc. – the field of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry;
- prof. RNDr. Pavol Mártonfi, PhD. – the field of Biology;
- prof. Ing. Martin Orendáč, CSc. – the field of Physics of Condensed Substances and Acustics.
The Rector also awarded the diploma of the Doctor of Science to prof. MVDr. Ján Mojžiš. DrSc. The named was awarded the scietific degree Doctor of Medical Science in the scientific field of Pharmacology, following the successful defense of a doctoral dissertation on: “Natural Substances and Their Analogues as Potential Anticancer Drugs”.

Within the program of the ceremonial opening of the academic year, the new bearers of the scientific qualification degree IIa were also introduced.
The Rector’s Prize for significant contribution of teachers and scientific staff of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice in the field of science and research was awarded to the following personalities of our university:
- prof. RNDr. Peter Fedoročko, CSc.
for excellent results achieved in the field of experimental oncology in studying mechanisms of intracellular signalization and for significant participation on building of the research infrastructure at the Institute of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Science, UPJŠ in Košice. - Dr. h. c. mult. prof. RNDr. Alexander Feher, DrSc.
for excellent results achieved in the field of physical research of condensated substances at low temperature; - prof. PhDr. Vladimír Leško, CSc.
for significant monographic work “Philosophy of the History of Philosophy (Strong and Weak Models)”, developing a theory of the history of philosophy.
Exceptionality of the ceremonial was enhanced by a dance performance of the University folklore ensemble HORNÁD.
