DISCARDED FURNITURE DATABASE

At present, the growing problem of waste cannot be ignored. We believe that we, as a university, should actively strive to reduce the amount of waste produced. Both the environment and our society can benefit from this. UPJŠ enables the donation of unneeded furniture to charitable organizations.

Here you will find a database of discarded furniture, which is regularly updated:

DATABASE

Interested in something? Contact Laura Hoľanová on 0905 385 911.

We also offer our students and staff the opportunity to give a second chance to unneeded furniture. Contact us at zelenauniverzita@upjs.sk and we will include it in the database.

COLLECTION OF USED COOKING OIL

In Slovakia, the collection of used edible oils and fats from households is classified as compulsory separate collection. Oil clogs and blocks sewers, harms animals, attracts rodents and causes a problem in wastewater treatment. Used oil can be fully reused in the production of plastics or biofuels!

Filter the used cooking oil (through a sieve) into a closable collection bottle. Then bring us the closed oil bottle.

Where: To the premises of UPJŠ Rectorate to the building of the former canteen (building in the middle of the parking lot, entrance from Dr. Kostlivého Street).

When: Always on the first Monday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

If necessary, contact Kamil Zelenák on 0905 675 418.

COLLECTION OF EXPIRED MEDICINES

The Slovak Chamber of Pharmacists warns that medicines that we do not need should not be left to pile up at home. This generates waste that is potentially hazardous to both the household and the environment. Approximately 10% of active or other substances from pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical products found in the environment come precisely from improperly disposed of medicines. Unused medicines may constitute hazardous waste. Although medicines are not dangerous to humans, they can contaminate the environment around us if disposed of improperly.

Good practice for recycling medicines:

  • Check the expiration date on all the medicines you have at home.
  • Remove expired medicines from their packaging and dispose of it in the appropriate waste (usually the box that for separate paper collection).
  • Take unused medicines in a blister, syrups in a bottle, sprays and creams in the tube back to the pharmacy or the front desk at UPJŠ Rectorate.

Where: front desk at UPJŠ Rectorate

When: quarterly, first week of March, June, September, December

Expired medicines handed over will be handed over to the pharmacy at UNLP, Trieda SNP 1.

How to be ECO even when buying medicines? The Slovak Chamber of Pharmacists recommends:

  • When shopping for medicines at the pharmacy, put them in your bag, purse, backpack. If absolutely necessary and you need a disposable bag, ask your pharmacist for a bag made of recycled material.
  • Try to recycle as responsibly as possible the packaging and components of the medicine that are intended for home disposal (boxes, plastic parts such as measuring cups, etc.).
  • Transport yourself to the pharmacy ecologically.
  • Do not buy medicines that you do not need and do not stock up unnecessarily.

BATTERY COLLECTION

Discharged batteries can be found in everyone’s home. Throwing them into municipal waste would be a big mistake. So what to do with them?

Batteries contain toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium and lead, which, if released into the environment, can seriously affect nature and human health. Because of recycling, the metals from which the battery is made can be reused in the manufacture of new products. Already unusable portable batteries (button, pencil, micro-pencil) should go in WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment).

Where:
UPJŠ Rectorate: ground floor at the front desk
Faculty of Medicine: lobby – front desk and 2nd floor – 4th section
Faculty of Science: Park Angelinum/Jesenná
Faculty of Arts: Aristoteles Building

CLOTHES COLLECTION

UPJŠ cooperates and supports several non-profit organizations that need clothing for their clients all year round. If you have clothes at home that are still in reasonable condition, bring them washed to us. We will ensure that they reach the right hands.

We collect:

  • Washed clothes.
  • Clothing without damage and stains.
  • Seasonal clothing (windbreakers in winter, skirts in summer).
  • We do not accept shoes and underwear.

When: always on the first Monday of the month

If necessary, contact Kamil Zelenák on 0905 675 418.

Bike sharing

At UPJŠ we have started an offer of shared bikes.

Shared bikes are gradually being added to our newly established bike garage.
If you have a bike at home that you don’t use and you think it could help your colleagues or classmates, bring it to us! We will give it a second chance.

And what are the conditions for using these bikes?

Where: Bicycles are accessible for employees and students of UPJŠ on the campus of the University Rectorate. The keys to the bicycle will be available at the front desk of UPJŠ Rectorate.

Collection of electrical waste

Electrical appliances have a service life. After they have served us and can no longer be repaired, they need to be properly disposed of. Appliances do not belong in the trash! They should go to the collection facility, where they are professionally disassembled and waste is separated from them.

A collection of smaller electrical appliances is always announced at UPJŠ in advance and the container is placed by the front desk at the Rectorate.

What unnecessary/non-functional appliances can you bring?

  • microwaves, kettles, toasters, coffee machines and other kitchen appliances
  • radios, shredders, fans
  • laptops, monitors, PCs, printers, copiers
  • refrigerators, dishwashers
  • table lamps
  • other small items of electrical waste

The collection container for electrical waste is not for light bulbs/fluorescent lamps.
