Free Movers,
Welcome!
Foreign students who want to add an international dimension to their degrees can apply to undertake a short-term stay for studies (a semester or an academic year), research or traineeship at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) also as free movers – i.e. independently, without being part of a specific scholarship/exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus+, National Scholarship Programme, International Visegrad Fund, CEEPUS etc.)
Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us!
Basic Information
Free movers do not get any scholarship/grant from UPJŠ. UPJŠ does not require any tuition fees from free movers.
Free movers must be officially enrolled in a degree program at their home university during the application procedure and during the whole period of their free mover stay at our university.
Free movers at UPJŠ are centrally administered by the rectorate-level International Relations and Internationalisation Office, but the admission procedure takes place at a relevant faculty, institute or department. Please note that the admission requirements for free movers are set independently by each faculty, institute or department and the admittance to study programmes, research stays and traineeships is limited (depending on the capacities, possibilities and a decision of a relevant faculty, institute or department).
We prefer students from member countries of the European Higher Education Area.
Application Procedure
Free movers can choose the same courses as Erasmus students.
Choose the Receiving Faculty
Select the faculty, institute or department where you want to study, do reasearch, or carry out a traineeship.
Contact the IRIO
Contact the International Relations and Internationalisation Office (IRIO) contact person.
Please always mention your name, name of your home university, your study cycle and year of studies, study programme at your home university, faculty/department/institute of our university to which you would like to come and semester(s) in which you would like to come.
Verification
The contact person at the IRIO will verify the possibilities with the relevant faculty/department/institute and if the application is possible, you will have to send the application documents.
Selection Procedure
After we receive your application documents, the relevant faculty/department/institute will review them and determine whether you can be accepted for a free mover mobility.
In cases where there are many applicants (Faculty of Medicine), the faculty will conduct a selection procedure to decide on admissions (and only some candidates will be accepted).
Are you searching for information on accommodation, transport, insurance, healthcare and other useful stuff?

Entry and Stay in Slovakia
Please check very carefully the administrative procedures and duties towards Slovak authorities related to entry and stay in Slovakia (visa, reporting the stay after arrival (Notice of the Stay), temporary residence of third county nationals, residence of EU/EEA Swiss nationals etc.) – please see the links below and contact the relevant consulate/embassy if needed.
Special Needs Support
Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice offers assistance to welcome students and staff with disabilities. However, the International Relations Office must be informed about it during the application procedure since the options we offer them and their acceptance are conditioned by state and university regulations and possibilities.
