The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice organized for the selected candidates from the Slovak scientific community the 4th international „School of XFEL and Synchrotron Radiation Users – SFEL2017“ in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, with the European XFEL, GmbH in Hamburg, and with the National Centre for the Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society at CVTI.

The 4th international „School of XFEL and Synchrotron Radiation Users – SFEL2017” was held from 9th to 12th May 2017 in Liptovský Ján, in the Sorea Máj Hotel.

The international conference was attended by more than 80 participants. The financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic and of the European XFEL, GmbH enabled for the students, PhD students and young scientists of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the Technical University in Košice, the Comenius University in Bratislava, and the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava to participate in the event. The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) also had a rich representation of PhD students and young scientists at the event particularly from the Institute of Materials Research of SAS in Košice, from the Institute of Experimental Physics of SAS in Košice, from the Institute of Physics of SAS in Bratislava, and from the Institute of Molecular Biology of SAS in Bratislava.

The directors of the XFEL Thomas Tschentscher and Seguei Molodtstov gave two important lectures that concentrated on the importance and benefits of XFEL for scientific applications. The lectures of Anders Madsen about the use of XFEL in the research of materials were equally important for the students and PhD students, as well as the lectures of the Slovak experts (Karl Saksl, Patrik Vagovič, Jozef Uličný, and Imrich Barák), who cooperate with the research teams of XFEL in the development of two experimental locations. From the lectures concentrating on the source of synchrotron radiation the participants showed a significant interest in the lectures of Thomas Schreiner and Rajmund Mokso.
