Ceremonial Opening of the Academic Year 2013/2014

On 16 September 2013 the ceremonial opening of the academic year 2013/2014 at UPJŠ took place in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ in Košice on Trieda SNP 1 in the presence of the Rector of UPJŠ prof. MUDr. Ladislav Mirossay, DrSc., the Vice-Rectors and the President of Academic Senate of UPJŠ in Košice, the Deans of respective faculties and invited guests – the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Mr. Štefan Chudoba, the Head of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic in Košice, Mr. Oto Sabo, the President of the Košice Self-Governing Region, Mr. Zdenko Trebuľa, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Košice, Mr. Bernard Bober and the former rectors of UPJŠ in Košice, the Members of the Board of Directors, the Members of the Scientific Boards and Academic Senates, the rectors of Slovak universities, the directors of health care institutions in Košice, the representatives of city’s institutions, the directors of the institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and other notable persons in clerical, private and public sphere, and employees and student of UPJŠ. Within the programme of the ceremonial opening, the Rector´s Prize was awarded to *prof. h. c. prof. JUDr. Vladimír Babčák, CSc., prof. RNDr. Andrej Bobák, DrSc. and prof. PhDr. Pavol Štekauer, DrSc. for their significant contribution as teachers and research workers at UPJŠ in Košice in the field of science and research. The entertainment was provided by the members of the University folk group Hornád.

In this academic year at UPJŠ in Košice, cca 2400 students will be provided education in all three cycles and the total number of students at all five faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Public Administration) and the Institute of Physical Education and Sport in the academic year 2013/2014 is more than 8,000. Nowadays, UPJŠ in Košice offers to its students altogether 219 study programmes in bachelor, master and doctorate studies, whereby to the most popular ones belong General Medicine and Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine; Biology and Geography at the Faculty of Science; and Psychology, Mass media studies and British and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts. The new study programmes in this academic year are The English Language and German Language for the European Institutions and Economy in the 1st cycle at the Faculty of Arts, Neurology in the 3rd cycle at the Faculty of Medicine, and Progressive Materials in the 2nd cycle at the Faculty of Science.
