On the evening of Thursday, September 28, 2017 a fire started in one of the rooms of the Dean’s Office at the Faculty of Medicine of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. The fire started in a vacant and closed office, which was handed over to the construction company to ensure the insulation of the western (Section III.) part of the building, where the theoretical institutes are located. The cause of the fire is at the stage of investigation and the material damages have not been quantified yet, but thanks to the early intervention of the firefighters it was possible to prevent damages to a larger extent. It is also possible to state that there were no people injured in the fire.

The rector of the university Prof. RNDr. Pavol Sovák, CSc., the dean of the Faculty of medicine prof. MUDr. Daniel Pella, PhD., the chairman of the Academic Senate at the Faculty of Medicine doc. MUDr. Peter Jarčuška, PhD. mim. prof., and other members of the faculty’s management came to the location of the fire in the evening, and made sure that the people, who were evacuated from the building were not injured in the fire and that the smoke in certain parts of the building did not affect them either. The firefighters and the police received all the necessary information and cooperation, while the representatives of the university and of the faculty expressed their hope that the cause of the fire will be clarified as soon as possible.

Since the unpleasant accident happened in the administrative part of the building, there were no significant damages caused and the teaching at the Faculty of Medicine will not be affected.
