The celebrations of the Košice City Day traditionally culminate with the presentation of prestigious awards of the City of Košice. This year, individuals and teams from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice were awarded as well. The Award of the City of Košice, the Award and the Plaque of the Mayor of Košice are awarded to individuals and teams – exceptional personalities who, through their life, work, and talent, have achieved significant success and contributed to the development and improvement of the city. For the second time in its history, the special PRO URBE award was presented. It was awarded to Bernard Bober, Roman Catholic Archbishop, Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Košice, and President of the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia, for his significant contribution to building social peace, preserving cultural values and traditions, and his long-term support of charitable activities in the city and the region. The awards were presented by the city management headed by the Mayor Jaroslav Polaček on 7 May 2025 at the Historical Town Hall to two teams and three individuals working at UPJŠ in Košice.
The Award of the City of Košice was awarded to:
the team of the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ and UNLP Košice, for their significant contribution to the provision of comprehensive curative and preventive care in internal medicine, with an emphasis on gastroenterology and hepatology, to patients from all over Eastern Slovakia;
the team of the Department of Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics at the Faculty of Science of UPJŠ in Košice, on the occasion of the department’s 60th anniversary and for long-term significant contribution to scientific research;
doc. MUDr. Adrián Kolesár, PhD., MPH, Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ in Košice and VÚSCH and a leading Slovak cardiac surgeon, for his outstanding contribution in the field of cardiology;
prof. MUDr. Ivica Lazúrová, DrSc., FRCP, Head of the 1st Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ in Košice and UNLP Košice, for her significant and professional contribution in the field of endocrinology and internal medicine.
The Award of the Mayor of Košice was awarded to prof. MUDr. Matej Škorvánek, PhD. from the Department of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ and UNLP Košice, for his outstanding contribution in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other rare movement disorders.
