On 1 October 2023, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University started to implement the AI2SEP project aimed at developing students’ competences in the field of artificial intelligence in solving environmental challenges.

Artificial Intelligence is now described as a driving force of the 4th Industrial Revolution and one of the key technologies whose impact can be seen in homes, businesses, schools and public spaces, enabling advances in autonomous driving, energy efficiency and care for people of all ages. 

The Institute of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik  University of in Košice has started to implement a project whose main objective is to improve the quality of higher education through the design and pilot implementation of 14 educational modules on the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in the environmental field. The project will create case studies and student research projects focused on solutions to environmental problems (e.g., applications of artificial intelligence to solve problems with plastics in the environment, challenges related to air pollution).

The project will be carried out by an international consortium of five universities and an associate partner. The main coordinator of the project is the University of Silesia in Katowice. The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is a project partner together with the University of Zagreb, the University of Maribor and Vilnius University. The project’s associate partner is Oracle Academy, which provides worldwide support in computer science and ICT education to promote knowledge, innovation, skills development, and diversity in technological fields. The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is responsible in the project for activities aimed at the development of IT students’ competences in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It will also host a summer school on machine learning and artificial intelligence for students from Ukraine. 
The project has been approved under the Erasmus+ grant scheme and the call KA220-HED Cooperative Partnerships in Higher Education. The project with a total budget of 400 thousand euros will be implemented from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2026.
